Rowena Hopper During my time as a cabbie I kept thinking in chapter titles when I had had a particularly exciting adventure. Some things that happened were sad, unbelievable, thrilling, exciting, humbling, dangerous and fun. I wanted to be able to share my adventures with a wider audience and show that women could do this type of job with style. Some nights were just plain boring and these were the times to imagine how the book would read, there is a lot of sitting around waiting for your next fare, time to reflect.
Rowena Hopper By knowing that my story is unique, as is everyone's story, I have something to say and want to share it. Often amazing people slip away unnoticed as they didn't write their story down and it gets lost forever. Part of history is lost forever in this way. In my book I was able to share not just my own story but many others stories as well, it's not just about me. I tried to show how we are all part of the same story but have our own perspective on it.
Rowena Hopper I keep thinking of all the things I didn't write about and imagine my next book filled with the missing stories that were not so much a part of my taxi life. I have started reminder notes on ideas for my next book as I have already been asked when is it coming out. No pressure!
Rowena Hopper Stick with it, try to look at it from a readers point of view, get assistance from where ever you can, know there is an audience for all genres.
Give yourself time away from your manuscript and don't give up! Imagine a big stack of your books in the window of a bookstore, it worked for me!
Rowena Hopper Being a memoir it enabled me to share my unique story and many other stories with a wide audience. To be able to share my view on life and put into words what I am thinking and feeling without having to have a conversation about it. To hopefully entertain and delight with my many varied adventures I had during my stint as a taxi driver.
Rowena Hopper I just put the manuscript aside for a while, days or weeks, wrote myself notes in the meanwhile when I thought of something new to add, then went back to it when I was inspired to write again. I had no one waiting for it by a given time so felt no pressure to complete it.
