Fran McNabb I write romance, but my favorite fictional couple comes from Leon Uris's EXODUS, which isn't a romance. I fell in love with Ari. He possessed all the qualities of a perfect hero in the way he treated Kitty and in the way he fought for what he believed. I still think about their relationship when I write even though I read that book in the early '80's.
Fran McNabb My latest book, SAVING THE CHILDREN, isn't out yet, but is about two people trying to rescue orphans from rebels in South America. One of our friends went on a medical mission to Honduras and while talking with him he mentioned one of things that made an impression on him was the smell of burnt cornmeal. Every place their group went seemed to have the odor permeating through the small villages. That one things started me thinking about the setting I used.
Fran McNabb That's a hard question because each of my books have been inspired by different occasions, but usually an idea will happen when I visit a setting. WINDSWEPT was inspired by a wreckers' museum I visited in Key West; A LIGHT IN THE DARK, from a visit to a park in West Virginia where I saw a waterfall. It's exciting to get a new idea!
Fran McNabb Currently I am working on a sequel to the book that will come out soon. That book, SAVING THE CHILDREN, should be out in a few months and I'm using one of my characters from that book in this next one. I have about 30,000 words written on it now, but I need more time to develop ideas for the rest of the chapters. Thanks for asking.
Fran McNabb If you're an aspiring writer, the best advice is to learn the craft and read what you want to write. I still take writing classes and attend writing workshops even though I have a masters in English and will have my 7th book published soon. No one should ever quit learning.
Fran McNabb The best part of being a writer is meeting my readers. I love talking to groups and interacting with people who love books as much as I do.
Fran McNabb Writer's block happens to everyone. I move away from the manuscript to allow the information "to percolate" for a little while before I try to continue. Before I try to start again, I reread the last few chapters, then usually my brain starts functioning again!
Fran McNabb Patrick, my next book will be SAVING THE CHILDREN, a romantic suspense set in South America where a nurse and a wounded SpecOps soldier rescue six orphans from the hands of rebels. Thanks for asking.
