Using robotic bodies indistinguishable from living bodies, and brains that merge AI with the deceased’s social media data, the Eliot Group has achieved immortality for its resurrected individuals. Unfortunately, the cyborgs fall asleep after a few weeks of human activities. They lack the restorative power of dreams. The Group searches for the lost key to AI dreaming in the Sequoia National Forest, where they have built a 12-mile rectangular building surrounding a sequoia grove.
In a more remote part of the California Sierra, Raphael Lennon has hidden with his partner Addy for four years. Branded an AI terrorist, he evades capture only because he is thought dead. To avoid tracking, they’ve forsworn electronic communication, limiting their knowledge of the outer world. When Addy leaves camp to buy supplies in Longfish but doesn't return, Raphael sets out to find her. He soon encounters the disturbing world that an AI-driven culture has created, including banning human art and executing artists, and sending AI-rule flaunters to slave labor camps.
On his trek, he meets Maya, a precocious nine-year-old, who guides him into Dream Minus 72, where the Eliot Group stores her cyborg parents. She tells Raphael that his destination, Longfish, is a center of Eliot activity, where computer scientists search for the dreams that will restore active lives to cyborgs. He orders Maya to remain at Dream Minus and he’ll return to her with the dreams. Disobeying, she follows him to Longfish.
In that city, he tracks Addy to a Fungi Farm, where prisoners cultivate the mushrooms used to create cyborg brains. From one inmate, Raphael learns the Eliot Group, led by Quaestor Nuart, has taken Addy to the Project in the Sequoia National Forest. After fighting automatons and mercenaries to get to Addy, Raphael is captured, identified as the AI terrorist, and brought inside the structure where they keep him as a prize fugitive. While resisting interrogations that are equal parts pain and pleasure, he must unlock the Project's secrets, undermine the Group's depraved plans, free Addy, and risk his life to bring Maya the dreams that will restore her parents.
