Yes, I am reading a ton of books right now. This is okay so far. Generally not a fan of 3rd person narration in YA, and something about the tone so far feels dated.

So the MC, who is a POC, just spent a paragraph describing a girl with "skin so pale, eyes so arctic blue . . . she looked like she was carved from ice." This is, of course, the love interest. . . Guys, THIS MAKES ME A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE.

Picking up a bit, but dang, Everett is NOT a realistic teenage in terms of the scope of his knowledge.

I think McDonald should have told us that the MC can see in four dimensions sooner than 75 pages in. Also, while I *appreciate* much about this book, I don't particularly like it--or care about the characters--yet.

Everett, why does this MPDG refer to you by name every time she speaks to you, Everett?

This is going to make me sound like a shallow reader, but I like the immediacy and intimacy of first person (I generally write in it unless there's a compelling plot reason not to). Even close third creates a certain degree of narrative distance, and in YA, where identification is often so important, I think first person POV offers a useful shortcut to that.

Rachel Hartman Fair enough. I write in it too, but I've been in one head so long I fantasize that 3rd person would feel less claustrophobic somehow. Sometimes a little distance would be welcome. There are books I've read with such a close 3rd that I remember them as 1st. The Curse of Chalion comes to mind. I'd like to try that, but I can't for a while (you should have heard the argument I had with my editor about this. Phooey)(he felt the need to rope in my agent, as if my agent were the more persuasive of the two. But that's when I always know I'm in trouble, when Dan gets called in. They gang up on me, those two. Not often, thank god).
