The book follows the season. We've come to the end of a long string of letters and now Boswell and Johnson are together again, this time at Ashborne. Boswell's letters have to FULL of pleas to meet. I can see why modern readers have trouble with this as a LIFE of J. This is Johnson through Boswell - a little memoir of 1,520 pages...

"Such was SAMUEL JOHNSON, a man whose talents, acquirements, and virtues, were so extraordinary, that the more his character is considered, the more he will be regarded by the present age, and by posterity, with admiration and reverence." And the rest of this crazy amazing, ponderous, worshipful and combative book is index...

Happy with how I've picked this up back up, just reading little chunks here and there on my phone. Once I'm done with it, will probably download the translation of Anna Karenina that I'm reading in paper... In the last year of Johnson's life, which how this book is weighed means I still have just under 200 pages of text to go.

Switching to my phone for little reads is working! Though yeah, mostly skim when Boswell switches to reprinting letters, much better is when he visits London and you get his reporting of Johnson's talks - his annoyances, joys and enthusiasms - his piety not so much, but that is the age.

Something about my own family history has kept this book on my currently reading list for so long. Always in the back of my head. Johnson twitching and that rolling gait, the limp of my dad... The fawning, Scottish Boswell...

Hurrah! Boswell arrives back in London and the undigested letters stop! Truly this is the rough grandfather of the biographical form who rambles around farting out stuff. 'My visits with Johnson, letters and a quick summary of the rest of his life' - can see why they went with 'Life of'.

Back to letters from Johnson to the incredibly pompous sounding, at least in his letter to Boswell, Honourable Warren Hasting, Esq. Though hell everybody in the 1700s sounds like he shits marble. And yes, I said 'he', cause this is the hardcore dead white male century. You don't get any deader, whiter or maler than the 18th Century, for real... Still, this is an amazing trip back to those times.

Johnson can't come out to play so Boswell turns to other sources, in this case a collection of 'admirable sayings' from Mr. Langton. So the usual cycle of letters, and 2nd hand reports replaces the more vivid accounts from Boswell's diary. B. does marshal all this most impressively though it just doesn't pop like his own stuff.

Talk of not wanting to hang out with a notorious enemy of religion (the book speculates it's Gibbon of Decline and Fall fame). Gives the book that alien feel of just how pious these guys were. Even if they were drinking and whoring, that didn't mean they were wrong to condemn Gibbon, says Johnson. Having this on my phone has sped up my reading - it is a great book to dip into while waiting...
