Quoting the authorized biography by Taylor Darbyshire, which I have here to look at - I love libraries!

When asked why he'd stumbled over the w in weapons in a speech: 'I did it on purpose,' the King replied with a grin. 'On purpose?' asked Logue, incredulous. 'Yes, if I don't make a mistake, people might not know it was me.'

Makes me wonder, who can someone like the King or the current Queen really be friends with? Between formality, sycophants, etc., how important it must be to have someone you can trust and like. Not that Logue and the King were best buds, but they continually corresponded even when not actively working together and there seems to be a special level of honesty and warmth that was probably quite rare for the King.

The statistics about the Blitz have a greater impact for me somehow after just watching 9/11, the bombing of my adult life in my country. 43,000 civilians were killed and over 1 million homes damaged or destroyed in the London area alone. I can't imagine living in that kind of fear, and with that anger and grief. We had 1 day, they had 75 consecutive nights plus more.

It's quite interesting to get a few glimpses of the King, Queen and Princesses behind the scenes, especially as the war began. The King continued to depend on Logue and seems to have been very fond of him as well.

Lovely how gracious and grateful the King and Queen were.

Seems like Bertie/the Duke/King had quite a good relationship with his father as an adult, despite a strict upbringing.

In 1924 the British empire had 1/4 of the world's population. This book is too interesting, I don't think I'll be able to return it tomorrow. I'm not skimming!

Interesting, written engagingly for a history book. Good points about the coronation speech being stressful because the words were not editable, about the history of stammering including an Egyptian hieroglyph, and the irony of "an heir and a spare".
