Pippi might generally be a happy, confident and unbridled child, an eternal child who loves fun, games and outrageousness, but there is also loneliness in her life. When she is sitting in front of the sea chest, remembering her father and their voyages, you can tell that she misses both.

I wonder what Tommy and Annika's parents will say when they come back from Pippi's birthday party with the pistols Pippi has given them. I don't particularly like this last scene, but at least it has remained intact, unlike some of the German translations which changed and even removed the pistol scene.

When I read this book as a child, I was only entertained by Pippi (and, I did find her somewhat annoying at times, although always lovable). This time around, I am also realising that there is an element of sadness to the story. Pippi is basically alone, and one of the reasons she "misbehaves" is not because she is bad, but because there is no one to tell her how to act.

I remember not liking the story about the Chinese man with his big ears even when I read this story when I was a child. I think then, I thought it was terrible that Pippi told a story of a little boy who died because he would not eat (kind of reminded me of Struwwelpeter stories), but now I find the fact that this man from China had big ears a bit insensitive and exoticising.

I have not read this book since I was a child and I am liking it more than I expected, I am actually liking it more than I did when I was a child. I don't think that Pippi will ever be my favourite Astrid Lindgren character, but she is certainly appealing, and I love how she plays tag with the policemen and tells them that she is already living in a children's home (her own, as she is a child and this is her home.
