Caroline Thanks, Alethea. Well, at least they saw the light on that one. It's small comfort, but it's something.

Nevermind. I saw they aren't going to return the deleted reviews. WTF. I can't be on this computer anymore. Need to just log off for my sanity.

Shelley (Goodreads is All About the $$$) So, so awesome. Wow.

*sigh*

Andre How did you notice that they were gone?

Ric There should be a common place everyone can move that provides the same environment for discourse as GR. Any suggestions?

Someone LMK when you find one. GR is the Facebook of the book-based social networking world. The other book sites are mere peons by comparison. SUCKS!

Alfaniel Aldavan BookLikes and LibraryThing are common places.

I havent been able to get into Librarything myself. I like Booklikes for posting images and quotes sometimes but not as a replacement for GR

Sketchbook GR has been coping with "glitches," such as LIKES not showing up. Have you asked GR, What's going on?"

Alfaniel Aldavan For who is considering LT and shelves-for-authors
http://www.librarything.com/topic/159269

Laura the Highland Hussy Lady D if your shelf wasn't about the author (and I suspect it wasn't), try asking GR if they just goofed by deleting the reviews. This is just the weekend of insanity here.
I'm at book likes now too.

Ayesha That's really awful!

Josephine Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious I'm a big fan and long-time user of LT. I paid 1 dollar to try out the service when I imported my entire home library, and then banked for a life-time membership when I found myself coming back. It's hard to keep track of authors who are badly behaved on a site like theirs, but I think that if GR gets over themselves, or if BL steps up as a serious contender, then it will solve itself. LT is a catalog and a community more than anything else.

ETA: There's a Author Hob-Nob group on LT, I think Tim would allow a group listing Authors to Avoid with a thread detailing why? Offering, also, a place for other readers to contest people marking such authors has 'bad'.

ETA2: If you scroll down the page that Alfaniel links (http://www.librarything.com/topic/159269) it didn't take very long for MaryShelly to show up. The same name whose comments appeared than disappeared in the original announcement thread that Kara made. But, as Tim says in his post, those spam posts are flagged and hidden rather than just censored. But, I'm biased toward LibraryThing. I've been a member for 3 years now.

ETC: Jeremy? Who's Jeremy?

Lady Danielle HELLO EVERYONE! To answer most of the questions asked:

How I knew they were deleted: On my page under Listopia Votes, I voted for the HP books as best books ever. That Best Book Ever shelf was on top of my Best Historical Fic. shelf; when I saw how the shelves were switched I clicked the BBE and saw that my rated HP books were no longer in my 'read' shelf or rated (apart from HP and the Sorcerer's Stone, that was still rated, but the rest were not). So I re-added the books. Here's the weird part: those books were not reviewed. not a sentence was written on those books except for Sorcerer's Stone.

How I've been finding some of my deleted positive reviewed books: At first I had about 223 books on my 'read' shelf; after reading GR's new policy I saw some of my books had been deleted (the number was now 195); I look over at my 2012 and 2013 reading challenge section. On my 2013 reading challenge, I read 44 books . I discover 3 were removed. So (I'm still thanking God and myself for this) I went over to my book blog on tumblr and went to my archive. From there I compared my read books, found the three that were removed and re-added them on my 'read' shelf here. The same was done for the 2012 reading challenge (I read 70 books but now it says 64). Now my read shelf is up to 207 reads and some books (and reviews) are still missing. If they were not in my 2012/2013 reading challenge section then they're books I've rated when I started this GR account in 2011.

I have not been warned. And that's the thing that makes me extremely upset. No email, no PM, nothing.

Yes, I have saved a .csv file, but since I'm little too impatient to wait 2099 hours for them to be exported on my BookLikes so I've been adding my reviews and to-read books one by one (though that's even a longer process). (sighs)

I don't know what's going on with GR and my reaction is the same as the lot of you.

**This comment scares me.

In case you missed the comment, check out The Holy Terror's comment about how to import all of your books to a .csv file: HERE

**I haven't messaged GR about this, but I'm going to.

Batgrl (Not Trusting GR With My Reviews/Shelves Now) Maybe they thought you were using the 5 stars ironically? ...No that still wouldn't make sense.

Yeah it wouldn't make sense. Not to mention J.K. is the first person on my 'Favorite Authors' section.

message 68: by Stacey (last edited Sep 23, 2013 11:08AM) (new)

Stacey I'm missing 17 reviews, and 11 books. I have no idea which ones they are, and have received no notices, so I'm hoping this is just a function of librarian combining, which has potentially happened before, except that right now I'm paying attention.

Batgrl (Not Trusting GR With My Reviews/Shelves Now) @Stacey have you written to GR staff yet? Because in theory they say that they will tell you what's going on if you email them and ask. So far I've yet to read anyone whose said they emailed them with questions on deletions. (Which makes me think they're getting a lot of email or just not answering it yet.)

Skyla Happy Go Lucky and Lost in Books Why did they delete your HP books?

message 71: by Stacey (new)

Stacey I haven't written. I just popped over here to check my numbers, and noticed that some are missing. I've been poking around to see which ones are missing, but it's hard to say because since the last foofaraw I haven't reviewed much on GR, so I'm trying to not get in a tizzy until I can figure out if reviews are actually missing, or if it's the result of combining. If I find one that I KNOW is missing, I will contact support.

message 72: by MrsJoseph (new)

MrsJoseph What the fuck????

You're leaving, too? Dang, I'd never guess they would hit you - your reviews are great.

Maybe the goal is just to get rid of any critical reviewer and stock this place with Sock puppets, trolls and authors - just like Amazon.

:(

message 73: by Amara (last edited Sep 23, 2013 11:38AM) (new)

Amara To anyone considering LT as a place to take their BBA and/or DNR shelves, I would point out a specific sentence of the thread Alfaniel linked in #67:

Tim Spalding (founder and lead developer of LibraryThing) wrote: LibraryThing does not want people cataloging books whose purpose is false--attacking books they haven't read, own or want.

And, in conjunction with that, I'd direct you to this claim. Supposedly, a GR refugee (back in April) was deleted without warning from LT for breaking this rule, and Tim Spalding called her dnr shelf a "hit list".

Now, I can't verify that this is true; I've only heard the story second-hand and don't know the person from whom it originated. But back in April, it was enough to scare me away from LT, and I think it's definitely something to keep in mind.

message 74: by Lady Danielle (new)

Lady Danielle @MrsJoseph My leave isn't permanent, I just won't be rating/reviewing books on this site until something is done about this censorship. But if any other policy is made that I do not agree with (like, the reviews being limited to 300 words, no GIFs, vote down button, etc), I'm gone for good.

Zero vi Britannia And yet, they kept my Author Needs to Grow the Fuck Up shelf (which is now renamed)

I heard about that - but I already have a LT lifetime account. When the Amazon purchase happened, I started working on my "escape" plan. I bought a LT lifetime membership (and uploaded my library), I started a WP blog [and also bought the domain name for the blog] and I bought the pro version of Book Collectorz. I d/l the csv of my GR account and proceeded to pull my book catalog into Book Collectorz. GR can go screw itself - my catalog is safe.

Question: were the HP reviews not specific enough to each book? If they were then this was against stated GR policy. But what the hell can be done about it other than move!

message 82: by Ric (new)

Ric As a science fiction fan, I found worldwithoutend.com as a site to try out. Reviews about the site are appreciated.
Tried LT, but it seemed more for cataloging rather than book discourse.
I don't mean to hijack LadyDanielle's thread here so feel free to PM.

message 83: by eden (last edited Sep 23, 2013 01:22PM) (new)

eden Sorry to jump in on a stranger's status, but I just wanted to comment about LT. I'm the one that started that thread on LT about their policy. If you're interested in it, I would recommend actually reading through the thread there, or at least keeping up with what Tim (the creator/founder) says, as his position has actually evolved in response to user comments (example: message 93 over there).

Further, Amazon owns less than 40% of AbeBooks, which was an early investor in LibraryThing. Tim still owns the controlling share, and Amazon has no say in what goes on there. (See here.)

•Erin• (Paperback Stash) I kept trying to reply to your recent comment directly, but it won't respond. I wanted to say with your stats being different, it may still not be due to deleted reviews. Sometimes you have to have it refreshed because the numbers mess up. Some in the feedback group have had to do that before.

message 85: by Tracy (new)

Tracy As far as getting a reply goes, on Aug 26 I got an email about a review they were hiding which had NO review and NO comments, just shelving. Since this was before all the crap happened on friday I emailed support asking why, TWICE, and never heard back. Now we know why. Don't expect an answer.

message 86: by Lady Danielle (last edited Sep 23, 2013 01:50PM) (new)

Lady Danielle @Erin Believe me, Erin, I've been refreshing my page. I also went to the book's page and neither was it marked as read nor rated (this was before I re-added them). To be honest, I said I was going to message GR, but they're not returning any deleted reviews. My message would be futile. Also, what excuse could they give for the deletion of 5 star ratings/positive reviews? It was too nice?

@Tracy Wow, sorry to read about you not getting an answer, it proves that GR doesn't really care much for their users.

Skyla Happy Go Lucky and Lost in Books I took me 6 months to get a response about an author spamming/attacking me.

message 88: by Lady Danielle (new)

Lady Danielle Skyla, my mouth dropped after reading your comment. When GR responded (after a ridiculous amount of time), did they say they were removing the author from their site like their guideline states?

Skyla Happy Go Lucky and Lost in Books No. They said they would speak to the author about spamming and make sure they knew the rules. By the time they had gotten back to me I had forgotten who it was. It was a minor author.

message 90: by Lady Danielle (new)

Lady Danielle Well this is funny: they spoke to the author and warned him about the "rules"; yet they decide to delete my (and many other readers') reviews/books/shelves without notice? Without being warned? The fuckery.

It's...very disappointing but I'm not surprised.

[Name Redacted By Goodreads Because Irrelevant to Review] So far, none of my reviews have been deleted (at least according to the number displayed on my account page) but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. I have some pretty scathing reviews of memoirs and one incendiary review of a book whose author I know in real life.

message 93: by Werner (new)

Werner Danielle, I'm so sorry to hear this, and so sorry to imagine losing contact with you here on Goodreads! (Of all my numerous Goodreads friends, you're among the small group whose friendship has been really meaningful, and you're far and away one of my favorite reviewers.) I'm going to be posting about this in the Goodreads Feedback group, and I'm beginning to reconsider my earlier decision to stay. :-( Maybe this will turn out to have been an unintentional glitch on Goodreads' part, and your reviews will be restored; I certainly hope so!

message 94: by Lady Danielle (new)

Lady Danielle @Ian As of today (about 7 or 8 hours ago) GR decided that they'll now be warning people about reviews they find inappropriate. I wish they would have thought of this in the beginning when they were deleting hundreds of reviews and shelves without notice.

@Werner Thank you for your kind words, Werner (it appears that I don't have you on my friends list, though). I wish it were the case that this is an unintentional glitch and would be restored (although I had to re-add some of my reviews); however, they will not be restoring any reviews that have been deleted.

message 95: by Werner (new)

Werner Oops! Lady D., it seems I confused you with another Lady Danielle, who's a veterinarian in Texas (and one of my top friends). Another one of my friends liked your status update, and when I read that notice, I assumed you were her, and had just changed your picture. :-) Sorry for the confusion! I just want to say that no matter which Danielle you are, you were treated outrageously, and you have every right to be angry and disgusted. (And even if you're not, I sure am!)

message 96: by Moloch (new)

Moloch I don't know if you're following the thread on the Feedback group, but your case was brought up. Apparently though, GR hasn't deleted your reviews, or better, it's not clear what happened. If you email them, maybe they can help you

Lady Danielle @Werner Hahaha! Totally understandable, it's fine. :) Thank you!

@Moloch Just checked, lots of talk about a [maybe] hack with the deletion of reviews. This is scary. Supposedly they haven't deleted any reviews since Friday? My books were deleted Saturday (possibly on Friday since I logged on Saturday, discovered what was going on a realised some of my books have been deleted, as well). I wasn't going to message them, but I am now. Thank you, Moloch.

That warning nonsense is garbage. It happened to me a couple months back, so i removed the "offending" material...and they deleted my review anyway and refused to respond when I contacted them about it.
