Oh, for Pete's sake. I thought this was going to be a heartfelt novel about a road trip to California so our heroine can scatter her sister's ashes and find out why she committed suicide. Not a drive through every single hipster stereotype imaginable. (Ooh, he listens to lots of old music and is friends with these stupid protestors and omg now we're going to see an obscure band for no goddamn reason.) ARGHH.

Mmkay, I'm liking the soundtrack choices. But otherwise, eh.

Okay, Laney got taken advantage of by some dickhead at a gig, and wound up pregnant a few days later.

She's now miscarried the baby, and gone up to Harper (our main character) like this:

Laney: "What if this is karma? What if I'm being punished?"

Harper: "Punished for what?"

Laney: "For slutting around. For not wanting it."

*facepalm*

Ergh, gods. Mentions of Jack Kerouac and Kurt Vonnegut, and so many other hipster things. BRB, bashing my head against a wall...

Mmkay, that was just stupid drama for the sake of drama.

I do see the front of the CD case before he tosses it onto the floor - Fleetwood Mac. They have some corny lyrics, but the melodies are enjoyable enough.

Fleetwood Mac? Corny? Wha?

This is reading like Paper Towns, but distinctly more 'eh'.

Ugh, the love interest is such a hipster that he refuses to have a mobile phone. This is just so... argh.

"I like some of the more indie stuff. You know - Arcade Fire, Regina Spektor, Magnetic Fields, Tegan and Sara... Laney listens to this Sri Lankan female rapper. I forget her name, but I enjoy her."

a. Okay, your taste isn't that bad after all, though I don't know if you call acts indie after they've made it big, like Arcade Fire.

b. Sri Lankan female rapper? You mean M.I.A.?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard The hipsterness in this novel bothered me.

Amy (Turn the Page) Lol I felt very 'unhip' when I read this. I ultimately liked this one, but it's why novels based around music tend to annoy me so much. I never get the references.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard Even when I get the references it annoys me. I read a book recently that referenced the Decemberists who I quite like but I still didn't like the reference.
