In every society, there are three groups: the large group who do not think at all, the substantial group who are not aware of anything new and who retain the same outlook for years and even generations, and the small group who are always opposed to the consensus simply because opposition has become an end in itself.

"Going steady", like much of the adolescent culture of the "jive" era, was derived from the gangster circles of south Chicago and was first introduced to middle-class knowledge through George Raft movies of the 1930's.

The Jansenist influence in American Roman Catholicism is so strong that sins concerning sex are widely regarded by Catholics as the worst of sins, in spite of the fact that Catholic doctrine continues to regard pride as the worst sin and sexual sins as much less important (as Dante did).

"The African sees time as a wide gamut of the present with a moderately dimensioned past and almost no future. This outlook is reflected in the structure of the Bantu languages, which do not emphasize the tense distinctions of past, present and future." It's all Sapir-Whorf this week... and I wonder if Quigley was aware that Chinese verbs don't have tenses either?

The Classical Chinese picture is the same as the Classical Roman one: the world becomes steadily less civilized as you move away from its center, in this case Beijing. Outside the borders of the Empire, you only have barbarians.

Latin America is descended from Arabic society through the intermediary of Islamic Spain; this is why Latino men are so corrupt, irresponsible, idle and contemptuous of women. No one can accuse Quigley of pandering to political correctness.

To my surprise, Quigley thinks that there was little serious risk of a nuclear exchange over the Cuban Missile Crisis: both sides had enough information to judge the situation correctly and know that the US threat was not a bluff, implying that the Soviet Union had to back down.

1956: the Suez Crisis and the Budapest Uprising occur simultaneously. The US harshly criticize Britain and France for their unsuccessful Middle East adventure, but ignore the Soviet Union's brutal crushing of the Hungarian revolt.

Stalin didn't think his official biography was fawning enough and inserted the following passage in his own handwriting: "Although he performed his task as leader of the party and the people with consumate skill and enjoyed the unreserved support of the whole Soviet people, Stalin never allowed his work to be marred by the slightest hint of vanity, conceit or self-adulation". One of Khrushchev's 1956 revelations.

Sandy Tjan Manny, please stop bashing Capt. Von Trapp. To suggest that he belongs to any of those groups is blasphemeous.

Manny In the preceding sentence, he does mention the very small group who think for themselves. There is a footnote I can't quite read, but I believe it says that Captain von Trapp belongs to this exclusive stratum.

Whitaker Wait, wait, wait. Surely he also mentions Maria. Does he not at least attempt to answer the age-old question: How do you solve a problem like Mariiaaaa!

PS: Is he saying that everyone falls into one of the three groups?

Manny His preferred approach to solving a problem like Mariiaaa is to use a core of fact-based quantitative analysis, while at the same time paying attention to intangible spiritual factors and avoiding facile philosophical solutions inspired by thinkers like Bergson and Nietzsche. It is essential to consider the macroeconomic aspects, but this, needless to say, must be done without falling into the trap of endorsing a simplistic Marxist-Leninist treatment. I know it sounds like catching a cloud and pinning it down, but he makes it work.

In addition to the three groups named in the quote, he also considers the small number of people who think for themselves, and the much larger group of people whose opinions track the evolving consensus.

Manny Oh, that's just the 21st century version of writing pamphlets. We have a long and honorable tradition behind us.
