Done with Ancient History and onto the Middle Ages. Still can't work out what age group it's aimed at though - the prehistory chapters seemed to be at about the right level for reading aloud to 5-7 year olds. The Ancient History chapters...a bit more advanced. And the cover with its 'INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER' is clearly aimed at adults even though the content is written for children. Marketing fail.

'It wasn't long before Henry was tired of Anne Boleyn as well, so he had her beheaded. Eleven days later he remarried, but that wife died before he could have her executed.'

"Both sides were happy that things had gone so well..." Not quite, though I can understand simplifying it for kids.
The 'native' barony of Jerusalem actually thought very little of Frederick II interfering in their affairs and trying to rule, especially after his wife (the queen of Jerusalem) died. To the extent that they replaced him as regent as soon as they could.

Factual innacuracy: Godfrey of Bouillon (later ruler - but not king - of Jerusalem) was not the leader of the First Crusade. He was one of a number of important knights, the most senior actually being Raymond of Toulouse.

It doesn't actually bother me, especially in a book aimed at getting children to understand the basics of 'world' (euro-centric) history, but I like to note these things.

Putting aside my problems with this book ,it's fascinating to see history for children writen from a different perspective - even if Germany, being a European country, is still pretty culturally close to Britain.

Tone is a little less patronising now. Less 'did you know?' and 'Isn't that incredible!' which I hated as a kid (I almost inevitably did fucking know and would express my own amazement if it really was incredible) and more just getting on with imparting the information in a nice simple and accessable way. Could still turn out to be a flawed but enjoyable read.

Lovely idea buuuut...6 pages in and already feeling patronised by the narrator...gunna have to keep reminding myself this was written for young children in the 1930s. Here's hoping it stops feeling so condescending once we get past the pre-history stage.
