The main story finally seems to start. Or what I hope is the main story in a so far unresolved mess of misdirection and events happening to Locke and Jean unlike in the previous books where they made things happen. Hopefully they'll now be back in the driving seat.

Almost 4/5th done before the upward arc begins. I don't see how this is going to be anything other than a very rushed ending at this point. A greater balance would have been nicer all around so far - intermittent upswings and less of a long drawn story as to how Locke and Jean ended up at sea.

Thus far everything has systematically, and unendingly, gone wrong for Locke and Jean. This story needs to start swinging in an upward arc soon, because its getting rather depressing.

It does, however, hopefully, look like we may finally start the main story arc. I thought that's what was happening when we went out to sea first as Captain Ravelle, but apparently the Gentleman Bastards hadn't had enough misery.

Linear story so far with no particular direction discernible. The newer characters, specially the notional villains, are not very credible. The Archon especially feels like a comic book villain.

The writing is more blunt, direct and less entertaining that the previous book.

So far this is on track to be an okay book and nothing more.
