Oh. My. God. I didn't think it could get more cheesy...but now Ayla is pregnant, and Jondalar is giddy and acting like an idiot ("Is it mine?" to which Ayla replies "Made from the essence of your manhood"). *gags*

Jondalar lets the audience know that the Clan are not animals, they are humans like anyone else.

And Danilar reminds the reader of Ayla's beauty and exotic accent. If this were the Earth's Children drinking game, I'd be dead.

Unsexy times! I guess there is a sex quota in this book, so Auel copy-pasted one in towards the end.

"Ayla expelled her breath explosively." You know up until now, I've been rather forgiving on the actual writing, but this line is just ASKING for snark

"Well, I belong to you, don't I?" Ayla, grinning, to Jondalar. NO! NO NO NO NO NO NOOOO! You do NOT belong to him! You do NOT belong to a man! You belong to YOU! And if he says you belong to him, you kick him in the nads! GOOD GRIEF!

Ayla and Jondalar bonding with Guban and his woman, Jaegar. They are, of course, super understanding of Ayla and her super speshulness and are in lurve with each other (therefore, Guban doesn't treat his woman like every other Clan man from "Cave Bear"). Did Auel even care at this point? Does she remember what she wrote back in "Cave Bear"?

Denassi remarks on Ayla's accent. Sixth time in this novel? Sixtieth?

Iset :) Let's do a side by side comparison with one of those uni library journals I keep saying Auel's writing reminds me of. Here's an excerpt from the journal, you tell me how it matches up:

"Thus although many problems in glaciology, particularly those dependent on long-term observations, can most easily be studied in accessible, temperate glaciers, there are still some questions which can only be answered in the polar regions where strongly negative temperatures prevail n the glacial ice and in the firm snow above it. In the North American Arctic the geographical extent of all land ice has still to be properly delimited." (credit to Baird and Sharp and their article "Glaciology" in the North American Arctic Research Journal, vol. 7 no. 3).

:p

Crystal Starr Light Was that an excerpt from "Plains of Passage"? ;)

Seriously, I wish I could say your excerpt and "Plains" have zero similarities, but I'd be lying. Auel ventures into textbook territory (talking about cumulus clouds, what things will be like in modern day, and such that neither character would know) way too often when describing her surroundings. It's always been a "problem" for her, but much more so in these later books.

Iset Too right. It's so strange for a series to decline. Usually an author tends to improve...
