Paul Hankins is reading Smoke: Poems
George Ella Lyon recommended this collection that comes from a nurse/poet and becomes a personal and poignant view of the human condition through the caregiver's lens. As a former caregiver married to a caregiver, I have a feeling this is one poetry collection we can share and talk about together.

George Ellicott's gift to Benjamin Banneker--books, a table, and some tools of the trade. Pinkney's book reminds me of what we offer to our students in the room. I like that Andrea Davis Pinkney shares the "whole" of the person being celebrated so far in the book. Hopes, dreams, interests as well as lasting legacy. A nice book so far.

And so we stayed in a pool of angry love. When I heard some people singing hymns in Spanish, I knew we were the insiders and they were the outsiders. This was about the ones who stayed in, against the ones who stayed out" (139). Manzano's writing is crisp and poignant all at the same time. This book will be a hit this fall. Think ONE CRAZY SUMMER mixed in with ESPERANZA RISING.
