I'm writing a book. A novel. I've wanted to for a very long time, I've always felt I could do it, and finally I decided to start.

I'm blogging as I go - progress, impressions, and musings. Please feel free to check it out if you feel so inclined.

Thanks!

I think it may have been a mistake to read this immediately after The Importance of Being Earnest, as that book seems to be poisoning this one for me. I keep finding myself thinking, "Wow, these goofy English toffs sure are taking themselves seriously all of the sudden!"

I'm 40 years old and I've never read any Jane Austen. Not only have I never read any of her books, I've never seen any screen adaptations of her work unless you count the film Clueless.

I'm embarrassed to come to such an important author so late in the game, but it will remain to be seen whether or not I actually enjoy it. :)

Holy crap, this book is addictive. About 10% of the way in, I found myself going, "This is amazing and I need to know what happens next" in the way I usually do about the same distance into a Neal Stephenson novel.

It looks as though I haven't read a thing in six months, but I swear it isn't true! It's just that I've been rereading a lot of old favorites recently, and so I haven't read anything NEW (to me) in a while.

Well, Sanderson is nothing if not consistent: his strengths are as impressive, and his weaknesses as glaring as ever.

More Dark Tower? Not a prequel or a sequel, but a mid-quel? Um...yes, please!

Benjamin Duffy is reading A Princess of Mars (Barsoom, #1)
Dry humor: 'The Indians had by this time discovered that I was alone and I was pursued with imprecations, arrows, and rifle balls. The fact that it is difficult to aim anything but imprecations accurately by moonlight [. . .] saved me from the various deadly projectiles of the enemy and permitted me to reach the shadows.'

I'm always tickled beyond all reason whenever someone "likes" one of my reviews. I feel like Taylor Swift winning her first CMA or Grammy..."ME?" *gasp* "You mean, you like...MY REVIEW?! This is the greatest thing EVER!!!" I'm a sap.

I just finished my 50th new (i.e. not counting rereads) book of the year. That makes 2011 my readingest (is that a word?) year of all time. I know reading isn't a race or a contest, and if not for Goodreads I probably never would have even known, but it still feels cool. Nobody lies on their deathbed wishing they'd played just a few more video games, or watched just a little more TV.

Wow, this is shockingly awful so far. Just in the first 60-some pages, I've had to power through irritation several times in order to keep reading. There better be some sort of payoff later.

A lot of books have that "Shit Just Got REAL" moment where the twists come thick and fast and the plot just seems to explode. Some books have several. Stephenson books become one long SJGR moment for about the middle half of the book. What a ride.

At this point, the story is starting to settle into the groove of a high-tech thriller. A Stephenson-flavored thriller for sure, but surprisingly standard. I'm sure the mindblowing curveballs are yet to come.

Over the course of his career, Neal has been guilty of research vomit over and over again, but that belies the fact that most of the time, he makes exposition exciting in a way almost nobody else can.

Bill Bryson is like that guy at the party who corners you and starts talking about moon rocks and salt shakers and Kodiak brown bears, and next thing you know it's two hours later and you've been riveted the whole time.

All of Bill Bryson's books are the same. In a good way.
