This book has mainly just made me appreciate him more. 'Griefs, at the moment when they change into ideas, lose some of their power to injure our heart.' -Proust

Just as good as "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?". "Chef's House" and "A Small, Good Thing" are new favorites.

Amanda Rivera is on page 60 of 183 of The Crying of Lot 49
"She was smiling a lipsticked and public smile, not quite a hooker's but nowhere near that of any nymph pining away with love either. Oedipa pulled into the lot, got out and stood for a moment in the hot sun and the dead-still air, watching the artificial windstorm overhead toss gauze in five-foot excursions. Remembering her idea about a slow whirlwind, words she couldn't hear."

"Day after day Cosimo spent on the ash, looking at the field as if he could read something in it that had been struggling inside him for a long time: the very idea of distance, of intangibility, of the waiting that can be prolonged beyond life."

"The Abbé spent the rest of his days going back and forth between prison and monastery in continual acts of abjuration, until he died, after an entire life dedicated to the faith, without ever knowing what he believed in, but trying to believe firmly until the last."

"That wish to enter an elusive element which had urged my brother into the trees, was still now working inside him unsatisfied, making him long for a more intimate link, a relationship which would bind him to each leaf and twig and feather and flutter. It was the love which the hunter has for living things, and which he can only express by aiming his gun at them.."

I started this book on the 4th of July, but haven't really read it since I started classes. I like it so far. It's very informative, and not very cluttered.

Here's a line that doesn't really have a translation though several people have theories on what Dante might have meant: "Papé Satàn, papé Satàn aleppe." I can appreciate this line because you can theorize what it means based on the context, but I don't think I can appreciate the whole book because this translation is a bit hard to read.
