“Everyone is happier if they have someone to look down on, as well as someone to look up to, especially if they resent both. This is not only the Beta Male strategy for survival, but the basis for capitalism, democracy, and most religions.”

On the night of the Beer Hall Putsch (Nov 8 1923) one of the first things the SA did, after taking control of Bürgerbräukeller and extorting the support of Munich's government (Staatskomissar Kahr, Seisser, & Lossow), was to begin rounding up Jews in Munich It was his time in prison, writing Mein Kampf, where Hitler seems to have solidified his objectives -- eradication of the Jews and eastern expansion.

I'm realizing how little originality Hitler had. His political ideas were absorbed from society and the people he surrounded himself with; initially it seems he was aware of this, and considered himself the spokesman of a movement, it's mouthpiece rather than its leader. It was the adulation of the masses which convinced him he was destined to leadership.

Hitler didn't become politically active until after WWI. The Social Democrats were blamed for the loss, and there was much scapegoating of Jews as both cowards and war profiteers. Those social attitudes seem to have had a large influence on the shape of his politics and policies.

Excellent so far. Interesting to read about Hitler's early life & Ullrich talks about some of the social and political climate in Vienna pre-WWI that shaped his personal politics, which is something none of my history classes ever talked about.

Also Hitler earned his living as a painter in Vienna & later Munich. Didn't know that. (Always heard him referred to as a 'failed painter.')
