I can understand why Bella refused to help Alfie, even if I don't agree, but her attempt to justify it... "Okay, Lucky, you was right, but you could've been killed, and if you'd been killed I would've been right and not you, so it means that I was right and you're wrong." It's hard to follow logic if there isn't one...

I thought that this book will follow the same course as the previous ones: action, journey, long political business, action. There actually were some political meetings arranged when the villain's attack intervened with the plans. The attack was cruel, but it did break the usual order of the plot, making it more exciting.

There is war, and deaths are quite common, though it's mostly minor characters. However, Naomi Novik can write a death in such a way that even if we hardly knew the character, we would still feel that heart-wretching sorrow at the meaningless of all this.

Helplessness of Leashed Dogs is overdone: I understand that they have no survival skills, but Sunshine doesn't even know to lick her wounded paw. In reality, licking wounds is an instinct; even if you take your dog to the vet it will still try to lick the wound after it's treated.

The problem with the Laws of Magic in Dresden's world is that they are not like juridical laws, but more like the laws of nature. You can get away with breaking Criminal Code if you are rich or tricky, but nothing will help you to get away with breaking the law of gravity - it will inevitably come back to whack you on your head.

I didn't expect to like Tamar and Nadia together, but their subtle romance and little signs of affection they show each other are sweet.

Krasian training is brutal and even cruel; but considering that one of its purposes is to separate future warriors from khaffit, it fits its goals and the structure of Krasian society.

So Genya will face trial after the war. I like it. You may switch sides, but high treason and attempted regicide will not be pardoned so easily.

I love how Nikolai's base is constructed. It wasn't built recently for the purposes of the war; instead, it's an old monastery turned observatory turned military base. Again, I just love Nikolai's unresting spirit who can't stop constructing new machinery. Pelican, his new flying ship, is amazing!

The second battle with the Marat left me deeply satisfied, mostly because the large part was played by the steadholders, who are basically farmers and craftsmen, not soldiers. However, steadholders had to struggle with the wild furies every day to earn their living, and as strong and skilful as any. The most impressive part was them fortifying the garrison and turning it into a fortress with the help of their furies.

Never ever mess with a mother. Especially if her name is Charity Carpenter. You know what she does when her daughter is kidnapped? She puts on her husbands spare armour, takes his sword, takes up a freaking WARHAMMER and goes in the very heart of fairy territory to rescue her.

Why no one had thought about dyeing Alina's hair? They say that Tolya is too noticable because of his sized, but a young girl with completely white hair would just stand out among the crowd even more.

This book continues the theme of dragon rights and equality started in 'The Throne of Jade'. However, the Napoleonic War is brought back into focus: it was agreed between Britain and Turkey for three dragon eggs are to be transported to England, but the British ambassador is dead due to 'the accident', his secretary gone and hundreds of thousands of pounds of gold meant for payment disappeared.

The story isn't bad, but the language makes me cringe. I don't know who is to blame, the author or the translator. Yes, the character aren't professors so some jargon is to be expected, but I can't stand seeing police officers talking like street thugs!

Now I love Mal even more. His feelings for Alina didn't change, but he thinks that it's not what she wants, and anyway, he has to stay concentrated to lead their group. So Mal puts his feeling aside for the sake of the business.

Though the battle is won due to a last minute trick pulled out by one of the characters (something that becomes Butcher's trademark), the battle itself is written with mastery and has a sense of epicness in it.

The plotline isn't as intricate as the one in other books, though it's still good, and Jim Butcher certainly has a talent for action sequences. However, what makes this book stand out is the relationship between Harry and other characters. He even managed to sort out his differences with Charity, and once we really see her, we can really feel the depth of her character.

Feral dragons present another side of the world to us. In Britain, it's believed that dragons who grow up away from people turn into mindless beasts. However, Arkady and his band may be more primitive than civilized dragons, but they are just as smart; they have their own language and customs - their collective storytelling, for example.

Even if the Apparat was dealing with the Darkling, he had abandoned him after the first book, and his actions never led to anything disastrous. On the other hand, Genya had poisoned the King and yet was forgiven easily by Alina. As for the Apparat betraying the Darkling, I don’t get what’s so wrong with betraying a mass murderer?

I see the Apparat as an ally who thinks that the end justifies the means – but I don’t see the villain. And yet Alina puts him in line with the Darkling. Alina says that the Apparat had betrayed both the King and the Darkling. I cannot agree. The Apparat’s role was never fully explained. All that we know is that he ruled instead of the King when the latter was poisoned and the Darkling hinted them to be affiliated.
