Wait, what? So, you create a character, make me fall in love with her and them she just dies after four chapters? That’s not fair!

I have a strong suspicion that it’s Lady Aquataine who stands behind assassination attempts on Isana, even though all the evidence points to Lord Kalar. But these two attempts were so sloppy that to me, they seem like a warning/frame-up attempt instead of serious intention to murder Isana.

It's so much better and athmospheric than 'The Lair of the White Worm'.

Reading about Yellowfang’s happy childhood and apprenticeship makes me so sad in retrospect, because I already know all the horrible things that will happen in her life.

Wait, what? The monster targets two girls, Lilla and Mimi, and once the heroes learn how dangerous the monster is, they decide to shelter Mimi and don't even spare a thought for Lilla! Never mind that Lilla is the primary target and Mimi is spiritually and morally stronger of the two! But Mimi gets saved because she's a (useless) love interest, and Lilla is forgotten because no one cares that she is left defenseless!

However brilliant Tamas is, I doubt he could've predict all the possible moves of the Kez and leave instructions to counter all of them. It's awfully careless of him to leave just before the decisive battle with enemy so that he can look for Taniel. I know Taniel is his son, but since the battle can determine the outcome of war, it should've take priority. Tamas could've just sent Olem and Riflejacks after Taniel.

Till now, I didn’t realize how much I missed grand battles with artillery, cavalry and infantry involved. It was also a good move to use Nila and Adamat as viewpoint characters, since even though the readers know about Adro’s plans for the battle, these characters do not, so that adds the sense of dread and foreboding and raises the tension.

A note to self: never harass a small man just because he is weak and harmless. His revenge won’t be a fast one, but when he gets to you, it will be terrifying.

Almost each time Asome appears, I want to smack him. But while I don't like him personality-wise, I appreciate him as a character. He is a very flawed person - he is arrogant, and power-hungry, and egoistic, but he has some good qualities, too (though they are few). I like that we get insight even into minor characters like him or Thamos.

What bugs me is how easy the heroes believed in the supernatural factor. In 'Dracula', it took a lot of time and effort on van Helsing's part to convince the heroes the vampires are real, but here sir Nathaniel just say 'Hey, there is a gigantic prehistoric worm-thing underground that can mind-control people', and Adam is just 'Sure, why not?'

Canim are such an intriguing addition to the world of Alera. It’s interesting to see it grow beyond the Calderon valley. And I have a feeling the heroes would regret not agreeing to talk with Varg… not because he’s going to do something bad out of spite, but because he had something important to say. Maybe he knows about Vord, too?

I’m so glad that Ashia and Shanvah are becoming more important characters! They are both such strong characters, and I can’t help but feel for Ashia’s desire to escape her husband and brother and live her own life. Also, I like that this book allows us to see more into Asome and Jayan’s personalities.

The Land of beyond lies in ruins, and its old life is destroyed. Our heroes lose their friends and family and comrades, and that makes the book grim and sad. And yet, there is hope of a new day, because there is a new land to be found, a new future to be discovered. That’s what attracts me in this book. In a way, it reminds me of the legend of Ragnarok.

Uughh, I so don’t like how Crow and Alexia got together. We’ve seen through Alexia’s PoV how she slowly came to view Crow as more than just a friend, and with Crow’s silent stoicism, it’s easy to believe he would fall for Alexia without actually showing it. I would’ve been okay with this development if it was handled properly. But Alexia is all like ‘I’m a princess, and I want you, so you must obey me.’ So – uugghh.

The writing never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat, especially now when three out of four plotlines are converging. The only plotline I don’t find terribly exciting right now is Taniel’s.

While the character of Victor and Ginger, the main heroes, doesn't appeal to me, I can't get enough of supporting staff as Gaspode, Ridcully and Detritus.

I picked it up because I hoped it would be like 'Dracula', but it's anything but. The supernatural factor makes no sense, and the characters are very weak.

What does Isana hide? He doesn’t just dislike the First Lord, she is afraid of him and Amara as his cursor. She acts like she expects to be arrested, tortured and killed any moment. What are you afraid of, Isana? What secrets do you hide?

I don’t envy Hilanska now that Adamat is on his case. If anyone can root him out, that’s Adamat. Did you notice how similar his name is to ‘adamant’? He is one of the most stubborn men in series.

I so love Bernard and Amara together. When Amara was introduced in the first book, I thought she was going to be Tavi’s love interest, because if there is a male and a female lead, it’s somewhat classic for them to end up together. So I was very glad when the romantic plotline took a different direction there.

Bo’s mouth hung open, one Privileged glove in his hand ready to be pulled over his fingers. “I’ve killed men for less.”
“You have?”
“Well. I’ve thought about it. I’m sure other Privileged have.”

That’s why I love Bo: he is a better person than he keeps saying.

Wow, wow, another Norrington is about to enter the stage? Will’s half-brother – or maybe not, because Norrington lineage is very hazy? That was a twist!

Wow... I expected the gist of protest against Isana becoming a steadholder to be 'we can't let the women have the power' or 'we can't let the women enter the government'. Certainly not 'now we have to pay for female slaves the same price as for males, we are losing money!'
