Oh boy was this "funny" horror story bad.

A walking newt gets an eye ripped out in a dark alley and a P.I. is hired to help him get it back.... of course at the same time there is a horror creature monster "cook off" in town and.... just awful...

I loved the Harry Dresden Story... Molly is pretty much the coolest character (besides MAYBE Harry himself) of the series anyway and this adventure just felt so natural...

Not really sure about the mixed bag of other characters getting their own stories in this anthology though... seeing the book called "Dresden 14.5" probably was a bit misleading...

Reading the foreword and the interview style "history of the show" segment, brings back fond memories to the time before August 15 when Jon still was the head of the Daily Show (And I still could love the format. Nothing against Trevor Noah, but i barely can stand the show after all the changes and people that left)

Hopefully the rest of the book will have the same comforting-familiar tone!

I'm quickly losing patience with the too far fetched Scifi plot.

What happened to just writing goddamned Thrillers without government agencies playing god and national security being spelled out in all caps?

A very similar plot with two detectives with former federal agency experience looking into industrial espionage with a defense contractor and with half the bodycount, could have been SO awesome. Alas...

6 Pages in and I'm already pissed off...

"I'm only using 11% of my gray cells myself"

That is a slightly modernized and more correct version of "10% of the brain", which makes it not THAT bad, but it still isn't how brains work. And in the prologue / exposition bit of a novel... it's still bad to write and to have to read.

Oh great... invasion of the bodysnatchers TOS style...

Or is it rather the brainslugs from Futurama?

Right now the only thing interesting me in this "problem" is how they will get rid of the parasites without killing off a whole intelligent species... anything else seems to be already out of the question as they have at least driven two species to extinction with their "benevolence"...

A pretty fast paced space adventure. If only the authors had a better grasp at describing what they talk about... e.g. the mysterious alien ship they discover is described as "five enormous spheres connected by an intricate web of cross pieces" and the color blue-grey given. That's it. No arrangement, no description of any surface details, nothing going into detail.

Wait a moment... There was a complete second rocket program with NO german involvement and they had a rocket ready for launch when von Braun had just arrived in the US that had much more modern elements like a thin skinned cylindrical hull and gymbaled thrust engines? And we get to hear nothing about the scientists involved in that despite von Braun OBVIOUSLY later switching from his V2 base model to theirs?

Hmmm, that was quite a bit too much detail for the war years... The A4 may be the grandfather of all moon rockets, but it did not go through that much of technical advances to justify almost 30 pages about it and the SS project for its mass production. OTOH all other rocket projects and the two rocket planes on german side were left out completely...

An interesting take on the subject, I like A.S.T.s way to write just as much as her YT webseries. Not too much special vocabulary but clearly a lot of research went into it and it tries to find a good balance between going into enough details to provide still interesting things to read you've not automatically heard before and yet getting into a nice flow that makes the read an enjoyable one.

Hooray! Thank the Dragons for Admiral Plain-Jane Rowland! Finally somebody who doesn't talk through their backside and says it like it is...

I'm not sure how I have wronged Novik, but that was the first glimpse of hope in a LONG time. She even brought in a THIRD insufferable dragon. *sigh*

I seem to have a constantly harder time to get to a point in Novik's novels where I truly start to enjoy the plot and dialogues... the bit after the little question of honor was almost painfully to read, despite feeling absolutely period correct, still... their way to talk gets worse and worse with each new installment. :(

Things.. HAPPEN. Action was witnessed... Excitement sneaked into the book.

Is this real or did i just dream it up? :D After what felt like hundreds of pages during that lame faire thing with the Rivers holding court it came as quite the surprise.

They even used magic. MAGIC! Real stuff that looks cool and useful. Not just a will-o-wisp on your hand or knocking somebody on the chest "without hands"... whow.

Weirdly the better recorded times of the middle ages went largely without TT specific mentions of digs and how they influenced the view on history as written down... It almost looks as if 1200 years of british history barely played a role for the series, between roughly the end of roman rule about 420 CE up to Elizabethan times.

It*s coming to the end.

The most intriguing part of reading is the comparison to what you remember from the video series of the same name. And how much it can improve on it.

Well at least with about page 480 it slowly got into time periods we have not already seen talked about in three or four books... and FINALLY somebody noticed that there was some dubious stuff going on. I was already despairing how inept all their various secret services must have been to not see any trends in these events. Do enjoy this part much more than the first few (dozen) chapters.

Oh how i hate things like this... I DO LIKE the writing. A lot. But the books till is SO frustrating. First of all it returns to events from like five books ago and slowly schlepps all the way through the storyline, giving us a lot of perspectives outside what was written before on the very same events and people we already have seen happening and doing stuff.
And then there is the endless letter-salad. Thanks DW.
