Short Stories from soldiers from Iraq, Afghanistan wars. About coming home to friends, family and wives a changed person. Most interesting is a man on a scuba diving trip who chooses to jump into a group of feeding sharks because that is nothing to him now. He has lived in fear and experienced the arbitrariness of danger and death.

Context and meaning are very important to motivation and interest. Education is often complained about as being ot of touch and higher education as being in a bubble. This is because traditional classrooms make so little use of the outside world.

Extrensic motivations and punishment tends to cause education to be devalued and students lose interest. Lack of control of what is learned and having to earn grades is not motivating but causes more anxiety. Concentration is lessened when students have no choice or control and dislike of school is common.

When Montessori first asked to conduct a study on how children learn, she was denied the right to work with elementary age children. She then chose preschool children but denied the right to call it a school, she had to pay for a building and furniture herself. She purchased child size furniture made for the home.

Elize is in Morocco and has met Erik, who speaks French and Arabic so they can travel around. They become lovers but have to deal some ugly attitudes among some expats. One couple is the patron of Erik's research so they have to be careful with them. I think this is a very average book about a troubled American soul who finds peace in traveling.

At work, teachers were trained to obey. Students' individual needs were ignored and they were assessed and graded on levels in which they could pass or fail. Schooling was also seen as being scientifically taught.

Administrators are more important than teachers and teachers are trained to obey and follow a curriculum that is outside their control. At the turn of the 20th century, administrators of schools could tell teacher or normal schools what they wanted to be taught to teachers.

The factory model of schooling came about because public school systems were created about the same time as factories were becoming popular. The idea is that children are raw materials which are moulded into products. Quality control and efficiency are highly regarded and grade levels are important. In the classroom students must be at the same level or they can't be taught effectively.

The prisons lacked fences and guards, inmate trustees did the job but few escapes ocurred because the penalty for escape was harsh and debilitating. James spent a long time there before finally going to New Orleans in the 50s to work in clubs. He often spent time working for Little Richard among others.

James Brown was born in the rural areas of Augusta Georgia and worked as "Turpentine Negro" extracting sap from trees. In the Jim Crow South, people were tough and people carried weapons. James made a living stealing guns from people, confronted before they could pull their weapon and other illicit jobs when the Depression hit.

Lilliard points out that Montessori's attitude toward pretend play has been found in error but she didn't include pretend play in her schooling model. An attitude which affected her in the 1920s as well as Piaget was that schooling was intended for practical purposes and pretend play wasn't seen as practical or useful.
