Seminoles were Native Americans driven down into Florida by the Americans and Blacks who had joined them. They were not originally a tribe. When Americans took over Florida, Those looking more "Indian" were driven into Indian Territory, Darker skinned Seminoles were enslaved.

Compulsively readable. Washington Irving who knew Spanish and his nephew had a lot to do with the mythological histories of Florida but they aren't true. People of color, especially black and red lost quite a bit when the US took over Florida.

The slave master dies and slaves sold to pay debts. The most terrifying thing in a slaves life could be the death of a master and the slaves being sold afterwards. Steward is sold to Helms, a man who moves to Genesee country with his slaves.

Great opening for a book about a industrial waste dumping which caused a cancer cluster in Tom's River, New Jersey. In 1971, a baby was born with a cancer that caused him great suffering. Expected to die before his first year, he lived into adulthood and was able to pursue a case against a chemical dumper.
