Very difficult to focus on the super-serious book club book when reading this is SO MUCH more fun.

Question for the Helprin fans: do any couples in his books get to know each other, or do they all just fall instantly and deeply in love?

I'm almost a third of the way through this and I feel like I still don't know what it's about. If I were reading this as it was originally published, in three volumes, I don't think I would keep going after the first book.

Sarah Kate is on page 80 of 272 of Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town
The lack of copy editing/proofreading almost makes me wonder if the library somehow has an uncorrected proof, but it doesn't seem so. It's seriously distracting.

I have high hopes for this, but I'm a little nervous about a glaring grammatical error in the first paragraph, sentences like this: "Over 250 in all, the Oregonian ran over two hundred and fifty articles in an unprecedented exploration of the drug's ravages," and placing St. Charles 40 miles from the MO/IL state line.

I'm enjoying this, but I can't tell if I missed a big plot point or it's supposed to be mysterious and there will be a reveal at the end. It's making me uneasy.
