This romance has been developing over two books at the speed of a sunrise: too slowly to discern every step, but then it dazzles and everything looks, feels, is right. I *dig*.

Gansey just quoted from Babe (the novel-turned-movie by Dick King-Smith). I can't even.

Oh goodness. Male Love Interest just promised to give Female Protagonist her first kiss in the event that she will die. Whyyy, terrible cliche, why?

Aghhhh. This political power play exchange here is so awkward and unconvincing. Does it really have to be THAT bad?

Yeah, that's definitely not how a newly blind person would act. Not that I know from personal experience, but I don't think he'd be going about things such as fastening makeshift shoes out of towels as easily as the book wants us to believe. This book, like, seems to take whatever ethnicity, culture, science, and physical disability it wants and appropriate it with barely a thought to its implications.

A character was just referred to as "Bristol-daren." "Da ren" as in ADULT in Mandarin? What are you, a child? Why would you want to say "Bristol-ADULT" when referring to someone? That's just laughable.

Oh for heaven's sake. Can we get a SMIDGEN of explanation for why Canada has become a province of the United Kingdom in this future world? Or how any of these new republics or federations came to be? Maybe you think this backstory isn't relevant to ROMANCE and DRAMA but trust Meir is.

Ahhhhhh the thing that's annoyed me throughout this series reared its head again!! It mashes distinct Asian cultures into one vague "Asian" culture. VERY VERY BAD.

I just realized that, even as I'm absorbed in the tale, I'm not SEEING any of it. Does that make sense? I'm not picturing the setting of Henrietta or any of the characters, I'm just flowing along with the rhythm of the words. Hmm.

Still trying to get over the weirdness of June having inappropriate feelings for her (gay) uncle. I know, I know that is part of the struggle she's dealing with--but it just reminds me too much of less well-written stories in which incestuous feelings are implied by overwrought descriptions.

So this book kind of dragged in the second half, when it finished talking about physical, tangible, active things you could do to boost your happiness and rambled on about spirituality and attitude. Was kind of hard to read at that point. Overall, an easy read to keep you thinking about your own happiness.

Must not fall for these assclowns... Must not fall for these assclowns... Must not--oh hell, I think I've fallen for these assclowns. They're like a group of boys on a CW show played by too-handsome-for-their-own-good teenage actors.

Okay, that was a weird moment. What was up with the mom and the outburst about not getting to her age with regrets? What does she regret not having done?

This is definitely not YA, but I wish it were *more* not-YA. If the narrator could have some more distance from the character...

A really good last third of the book does not excuse a frustrating, annoying, and overly wrought beginning. Hmmm, my thoughts on this must coagulate further.

Wah wah wah, everything's got to be so damn DRAMATIC. Pickup's eyes are always bulging with anger; Rachel is always experiencing near vertigo; she's always apologizing to Mycroft; Mycroft's always doing something stupid without thinking and regretting it. CALM DOWN, EVERYONE.

Against my expectations, I'm picking up a lot from this book. I thought I wouldn't get much from it because Rubin approaches her Happiness Project with solid knowledge of who she is, how she operates, what her strengths and weaknesses are, and can tackle this project in her best way. But what about those of us who don't yet know ourselves that well?

Inspired to pick this up by some of the inspirational Instagram accounts I follow. It's interesting to try to see Rubin's resolutions and methods in my own current life, as I think I've done what she could not do and am trying the "radical" approach to finding my own happiness.

While Gone Girl was a Da Vinci Code-esque fast-paced thriller read for me, I think I'm going to relate to Sharp Objects much more: the protagonist with the painful history and minefield family relationships, the utterly inexplicable viciousness of teenage girls, the pros and cons of living in a small town and knowing everybody's business.

I said it for Kenny and the Dragon and I'll say it again here: DiTerlizzi's storytelling is like fantastical spectres--appealing from a distance, but get up close and there's nothing to hold onto.

Definitely didn't enjoy the sequel as much as I did the first. So sad! I had high hopes for this series to be an interesting mystery featuring a sassy, too-smart-for-her-age girl. Doubt I'll be continuing on though.
