This is the first MacCammon novel I've read in decades (unless you count my re-reading of Swan Song). It's ok so far. It's engaging and very post- apocalyptic. But nothing new. I'm enjoying it.

i have never read a novel where such importance is put on sperm. ugh. and i refuse to believe this is a symptom of the central character being a teenage boy.

The issues I mentioned in previous status updates only get worse. This book is unique and amazing for many reasons and worth the read, but this issue of "sperm is the foundation of humanity" is messing with my enjoyment of this book. it's repeated over and over and i'm not allowed to pretend it wasn't said.

...and let me add that this book reads WAY too male for my liking. the narrator even thinks that children come from men's sperm. it's a very exclusive way to tell a story and it's off-putting to me as a woman. i don't mind reading male characters (of course i don't) but this does it in such a way that i feel VERY sure that this book was not written for a reader like me. and that is something else.

Ok, so the main character is horny and shit, and he's not sure if he's gay, giant bugs are hatching from people's body. so why does this read like NOTHING IS HAPPENING? i don't get it. might be the tone. it's so distant and indifferent. might be the audiobook reader (whom i find really annoying. he makes female characters speak the way the stereotypical gay men). i bought this book because i liked the title. hmmm

I picked this up because I wanted something fun and biting. It is all that so far. Note: the Nigerian American character is TOTALLY off. TOOOOOTALLY. Like, "author just read up Nigerians on Wikipedia" kind of off. I'm Nigerian American; I know the struggles VERY VERY well. This book doesn't get it. BUT this doesn't ruin the book. Still fun and biting and excellent YA.

Am totally addicted to this. Why in God's name did it take me this long to read this? This is the exact kind of book I love reading. I'm stressing out because I'm going to finish this soon and I NEED something else like it to fill the gap it'll leave. This is some good good readin'.

am enjoying Helon's excellent writing and the setting. the characters, however, leave much to be desired. i find them uninteresting, oddly unemotional. and the narrator's accent is really off. he mispronounced Igbo (unacceptable!) and does not say Lagos like a nigerian.

i don't know the page #. this is an aduio book. am about 75% done. beautifully written. excellent world-building. the narrator does an awful "african" accent, makes her sound stupid, her indian accent is far more believable (not really clear what country narrator is from, which i do NOT like. Mauritania). the book has a touristy feel that bugs me. too much explaining or EVERYTHING. all in all, very much enjoying.

this is a reread. i read this years before it was published. then read it after it was published, read it again. such a great novel. am advance reading a portion of pat's new novella (The Slow Regard of Silent Things),too, so i'm listening to it to get back into the story's world.

I bought this as an impulse buy while heading to my gate at Midway airport. I fly a LOT and I've got a mild case of "fear of flying", despite this fact. This book is giving me EXACTLY what I expected and needed. So far, I'm very very glad I bought it.

ok, the beginning was a bit slow for me but i'm in now. it was temeraire the dragon that got me. if it weren't for the dragon character, i'd have put this down. up to that point, none of the characters interested me.

This is the kind of book where though it's not all that well written or poorly written, it's utterly addictive. I can't stop reading it because I MUST know what happens next. The only issue I have is that I wish the story had stayed with the mother who was divorced instead of jumping to her daughter, as if her mother has nothing left to aspire to other than seeing to her children. Still, I find this book riveting.

Hmm, girl (who happens to be white) wanted by multiple empty-headed guys, who is just soooo talented at stuff but has to hide her talent...where have i seen THIS before? and the romancy stuff is driving me nuts. the shoulder touching, awareness of proximity, flutters, heart pounding...ugh. unlikable main character (imho), but that's cool. still, it's fun stuff. i hv more thoughts but let me finish this.

Ok, so I ended up HAVING to buy the overpriced audiobook. That wasn't cool. I felt forced to because of the disabled text-to-speech. Anyway, now that I pushed past the first 15% of the book, I'm addicted. It got a lot better and the plot has finally begun and it's a HELL of a plot! WHOO! Still wish King would quit with the dream sequences, but that's just his thing so I doubt it.

Oh my God, this is so boring. I am really frustrated. Great, Danny's grown up and is messed up and having nightmares (enough with the damn nightmares! they are boring)...what's the plot? why should I care? Who was that lady whom I think was just made into a vampire? I'm close to putting this down because it's boring. Plus it SUCKS that the text-to-speech option is disabled.

I read the Kindle sample and had to buy it because I HAD to keep reading. I'm in. But, already, I notice a VAST difference when the issue of race is added to this issue of gender. I think as a black women, some of my struggles in this area are difference and my perceptions are different and the ways that society treats and perceives me are different. Hmmm. But so far, VERY inspirational and informative.

What's the plot again? Haha, seriously, I don't know. Still, this book is a lot of fun. I am loving the woven in commentary on black hair and how she's dealing with that schist between blacks of the Diaspora. So much of this will be foreign to readers on the outside. I love that she's bringing these issues forth.
