Carter did not have a close relationship with Clinton at first. They later hit it off and Carter assisted in the Norh Korea nuclear crisis in the early 1990s. However, Carter over steppes his bounds by announcing an unofficial deal on CNN. He criticized Bush administration for Guantanamo.

Carter was incredibly engaged in foreign policy after his presidency. Perhaps trying to finish unfinished business. He helped elections in Panama go smoothly though they were corrupt. He helped more in Nicaragua, using lessons from Panama.

Carter lost by a huge margin and may be a result of not reaching an agreement with Iran about the hostages. Carter was not a fan of Reagan. Iranian deal made morning of inauguration, but Iran refused to let planes with hostages fly until after Reagan inaugurated.

Campaign against Reagan. President unpopular, but Reagan too far right. Independent candidate takes moderate votes. Iran hostage situation gets more complicated when Iraq invades Iran. Economy weak but looking up. Reagan trying to "take" key demographics crucial for Carter success.

The primaries were rough against Ted Kennedy and went to convention. Breakdowns in Iran hostage talks and failed attempts at force embarrassed the president. There were also problems with his brother travelling to Libya. Carter won, but Kennedy failed to attempt to show any unity between the candidates afterwards.

Tension with Russia/Cuba. Leader of Iran is I'll and requests to come to US for treatment. Causes uproar by Iranians starting the hostage situation. Carter cancels political trips so to focus on international affairs thinking that his performance in these crises was more important than the political trail.

Inflation and unemployment was high. Carter seemed more focused on energy, cutting the budget and international issues like the SALT II treaty and relations between Israel and the Middle East. Many saw his administration as floundering. Next election did not look good.

Talks with Egypt and Israel don't go very far, Egypt needing to support Palestine as to not upset the region. Many domestic problems, Dems calling for govt spending. Worked on ethics...lost support of his party. Bad midterm election results, rise of right wing. Watered down energy legislation not including any taxation loves to encourage conservative use if gas rather than complacency with high prices.

His reorganization plans wee faced with opposition in a weary post-watergate Congress. He also sought to reduce energy consumption and reform SS. He had troubles with Israeli population by seeming to favor Palestine. Stagnant economy but conservative policies angered liberal factions of the party.

During his first year in office, Carter fulfilled his campaign promises to not follow the party machine and do what he believed was right. This included focusing on human rights and reorganizing government.

Primary almost went to convention, but Carter won when other candidates ceded their delegates. Republicans were very divided because of Reagan and this helps Carter. Dependent on come from nowhere story. Not democratic or republican, only considering attacked political system. Very close race.

Carter had an excellent team that saw the importance of inertia in the primaries. They recognized the importance of Iowa in doing this. They were very personal going door to door and using volunteers to share their stories about Carter and lobby for his supports in the grassroots.

Carter became a state senator and then decided to run for governor. He was unsuccessful at first, but gave it another try in the next cycle. He ran his campaigns as an outsider. He didn't do much for race relations, but he also didn't hurt them. Being a moderate democrat and with he leaders of the party choosing not to run, he became a viable candidate though many didn't take him seriously at first.

Carter grew up in the South surrounded by African Americans. Father was hard to please. Went into the navy and had much engineering training. Married young, had children early, moved away from south only to return to help his mother after his father a death. Little interest in politics because of his moderate views, but a supreme Court decision paves the way for him to be a viable candidate in the south.

Carter was the people's president and had high approval ratings in the first half of his presidency, but the economy went sour and took his presidency along with it. He enacted helpful environmental policies and handed over control of the panama canal to Panama. Why did everything go bad?

This series of books "the American Presidents" is very good. Straight forward and written to read quickly and easily. They give you a basic idea of the men and what went down while in office. a good spring board for further reading.
