He forgave draft dodgers unconditionally. That alone makes him one of the best presidents in my estimation.

Carter is remembered for being shrewd in his political dealings, not being able to 'play the game' in Washington. A better question might be, why wouldn't his rivals play ball with him? I'm barely into this book, but so far, he seems to be one of the most moral presidents we ever had. In modern times, anyway. And his legacy was compromised for those morals.

Carter did not have a close relationship with Clinton at first. They later hit it off and Carter assisted in the Norh Korea nuclear crisis in the early 1990s. However, Carter over steppes his bounds by announcing an unofficial deal on CNN. He criticized Bush administration for Guantanamo.

Carter was incredibly engaged in foreign policy after his presidency. Perhaps trying to finish unfinished business. He helped elections in Panama go smoothly though they were corrupt. He helped more in Nicaragua, using lessons from Panama.

Carter lost by a huge margin and may be a result of not reaching an agreement with Iran about the hostages. Carter was not a fan of Reagan. Iranian deal made morning of inauguration, but Iran refused to let planes with hostages fly until after Reagan inaugurated.

Campaign against Reagan. President unpopular, but Reagan too far right. Independent candidate takes moderate votes. Iran hostage situation gets more complicated when Iraq invades Iran. Economy weak but looking up. Reagan trying to "take" key demographics crucial for Carter success.

The primaries were rough against Ted Kennedy and went to convention. Breakdowns in Iran hostage talks and failed attempts at force embarrassed the president. There were also problems with his brother travelling to Libya. Carter won, but Kennedy failed to attempt to show any unity between the candidates afterwards.

Tension with Russia/Cuba. Leader of Iran is I'll and requests to come to US for treatment. Causes uproar by Iranians starting the hostage situation. Carter cancels political trips so to focus on international affairs thinking that his performance in these crises was more important than the political trail.

Inflation and unemployment was high. Carter seemed more focused on energy, cutting the budget and international issues like the SALT II treaty and relations between Israel and the Middle East. Many saw his administration as floundering. Next election did not look good.
