Hate it when a book is failing to capture my attention and I have such high hopes for it.

I've finished Scott's story (the first of the two books included in this book) now. Very painful and depressing to read the last pages of that one, but I'm glad I did.

we have given our lives for our country—we have actually made the longest journey on record, and we have been the first Englishmen at the South Pole.

I don't know what to think of Amundsen's chances. If he gets to the Pole, it must be before we do, as he is bound to travel fast with dogs and pretty certain to start early. On this account I decided at a very early date to act exactly as I should have done had he not existed. Any attempt to race must have wrecked my plan, besides which it doesn't appear the sort of thing one is out for.

...self-assertion is a mask which covers many a weakness. As a rule we have neither the time nor the desire to look beneath it, and so it is that commonly we accept people on their own valuation. Here the outward show is nothing, it is the inward purpose that counts. So the 'gods' dwindle and the humble supplant them. Pretence is useless.

Just been to the Scott's Antarctic exhibition at the Natural History Museum and enjoyed it do much that I wanted to read about it. The first 19 pages are excellent and am enjoying hearing Scott written voice. I'm addicted to this book.

And now the end is near...and he still took Bowers on the last slog even though I wished otherwise.

It's hard to read of his optimism about the sledges, knowing he's about to lose one and the others will break down :-(

After a slow start just describing ice around the boat, the arrival starts getting interesting. Can't remember who is where and which camp is which though as it all gets confusing!
