The Fourth State of Matter by Jo Ann Beard is the first essay - a powerful story of death and love.

The Glass Essay (Carson) and Physical Evidence are both quite good.

Mark Doty - Return to Sender - okay. Some good self-reflection but a little tough to follow at times.

The first four selections have been varied and engaging. I'm a fan of Rebecca Solnit and Philip Lopate, and creative nonfiction is right up there with literary fiction as my favorite forms of writing.

"Embalming Mom" handles time in an unusual and provocative way.

Three essays into this anthology and I will say that so far, the best I've seen for CNF. And note:it only costs about $15, a fraction of the price of most CNF Anthologies. The first three essays blew me away: JoAnn Beard's "The Fourth State of Matter," Wendell Berry's "Getting Along with Nature," and Eula Biss' "The Pain Scale." GREAT STUFF.

Awesome so far. I've read the Biss and Beard but nice to re-read them.
