The martians continue their destruction upon London England, and many people are dying. The main character describes how the aliens use this black, poisinous gas that suffocates people. THe martians also use their deadly heat rays to eliminate most soldiers. War of the Worlds was a great book because I was intriguied by the movie, and I wasn't disappointed by the original story. H.G. Wells used his vast imagination to create the fictional Martians which seem real based on his terrifying imagery. The Martians invaded London and took many human victims. The protagonist of the story is able to survive the destuction. The aliens failed to take over Earth.

Just started this classic I've been meaning to read on my e-reader (alright free iBook!), and it's promising even this early on in the game. I love me that old school sci-fi.

this seems to be a repeat of the invisible man, it's just not capturing my attention and I don't feel like I'm making a connection with the main character... 6 chapters in and he's still a stranger.

Noone would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water

With wine and food, the confidence of my own table, and the necessity of reassuring my wife, I grew by insensible degrees courageous and secure.

“A shell in the pit," said I, "if the worst comes to worst will kill them all." The intense excitement of the events had no doubt left my perceptive powers in a state of erethism. I remember that dinner table with extraordinary vividness even now. My dear wife's sweet anxious face peering at me from under the pink lampshade, the white cloth with it silver and glass table furniture—for in those days

even philosophical writers had luxuries—the crimson-purple wine in my glass, are photographically distinct. At the end of it I sat, tempering nuts with a cigarette, regretting Ogilvy's rashness, and denouncing the shortsighted timidity of the Martians. So some respectable dodo in the Mauritius might have lorded it in his nest, and discussed the arrival of that shipful of pitiless sailors in want of animal food.

I do love older British books and their characters, but this book stands out more than the others. Aliens in 1898? Pssh - aw. That's unheard of... And yet just as brilliant as it is crazy.

Started again on this book. Amazing - considering when it was written. I'd also like to hear the radio show that caused so much hysteria.
