The inciting incident happened at the very beginning of the book when the metal cylinders crashed in Winchester (England). This disturbs everyone in that area and then not much happens until the cylinder opens but as the cylinder is the first thing that changes the setting it is the inciting incident.

Very intense, but no strong characters. Every character so far is flat and unimportant, the book is more focused on the story of the Martians invasion.

Slow start, but short chapters for quick reading. Had to see when the book was written to understand the era that it was written for, makes sense now that they don't have planes to deal with the machines.

Re-reading this for a class. Don't worry, I chose H.G. Wells on purpose. I can't wait to re-read Moreau! :D

War of the worlds is a classic science fiction book by H.G Wells. So far I really enjoy the way it is written and want to keep on reading. Right now a Martian ship has fallen to earth. People can't imagine another race, much less one far more intelligent than them. When they begin to fathom what is going on they are set into panic.

The setting of the book makes the aliens look a lot more advanced as it is old England so everyone isn't as smart as they are now. This influences how characters see the aliens as they see them as extremely smart beings instead of just another race.

This is a fun story and the period setting with the alien invasion was unique to me. I can see how this could be the alien invasion story to inspire all others :)

Well, things are really picking up now! Less technical recollection now and more in-the-moment characterization and description.

I'm pretty sure I liked The Time Machine better. :/ But overall, I'm thinking that Wells' style just doesn't appeal to me terribly...for some reason I have yet to finish analyzing.

I just watched the movie as it was obviously different from the book. I'm not sure which version is the worst, the "dad is a jerk" from the movie was the usual poor scenario. However, the more contemporary setting was nice (but a little old because they weren't all using their smartphones to take videos of the aliens :p). I'm curious to see now how they'll deal with the Martians in the book.

I've difficulties to enter the story because it's scifi but in the past (octopus-like Martians are invading England, people take their furnitures and silverware before running away!). The story is focused on the run rather than the aliens, it doesn't help.

The conflict that is the main problem for my character is of course England is at war with the alien things. Although, right now the conflict he is facing is weather to let his wife stay where she is (a neighboring village) or go back and get her before fleeing to safety.

The book is always better than the movie, (sorry Tom) this tale is no exception. H.G. Wells from what I have read so far has a lot of interesting "one line" snippets about humanity. Although most often they bring to light the futility of mans efforts to exists indefinitely. Recommend this book to anyone looking for a great short read.
