The last few chapters had interesting turn of events - who is sane and rational, how is crazy. I was confused at first, then started to read few chapters back - yes, there were signs of these events to come, but not all of them are easy to explain, specially the roles of Taylor, his sister and wife. I am yet to figure them out.

This book somewhat reminds me of " A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" ( one of my favorites) But heavier... Maybe a little of Steinbeck's " East of Eden" mixed in. I'm hoping the two babies Frances and Mercedes play a bigger role in the future of this story... Because of their kindness.. For balance. Too heavy for tonight so I read some of it and then switched it up for a lighter read " The Cobweb Bride".:)

James is such a jerk! I don't understand why Materia puts up with him.

Character of Frances is taking over the narrative, she is carring it on her little, narrow, bitter-at-life and guilt-ridden 16-year-old shoulders "Frances has got a dry look, tinder in the eye; her voice is a stack of hay heating up at the centre, her mouth a stiched line. "I'm the Devil."

Relationship between sisters is so well described, it is touching and sad at the same time.

Very interesting style of writing. I feel like I am talking to a friend and she is streaming giving me the story through describing still images and short video clips...from early 1900s.

His mother had milled her own wool, spun, woven and sewn, a different song for every task, till wee James had come to see the tweeds and tartans as musical notation.

one heck of a debut novel. slow going but macdonald's voice lends a sort of lyricism to her prose.

A very depressing read, with VERY messed up characters. However, the style in which it is written is enough to keep me interested in what actually happened, specifically to Kathleen. I know more horrible things lay on the horizon, but I'm prepared for that.

Good writing, but depressing, and I have a feeling it's going to spiral further downward.

The first line: "They're all dead now".

Well... ain't this novel a bright ray of sunshine?

I was afraid to ever read this again because I was worried it would not be as amazing a second time around.

Beautiful style, amazing and poetic images - I just wonder about the contents of the story itself. - I am not sure whether they will interest me enough

This is the first book in awhile where there was a scene when I actually tried to cover my eyes while reading. Like it was a movie and someone was going to tell me when it was over.

I loved this book. It was very hard to pick up another when I was finished. I don't think I've found anything to compare as yet

It took a while to get 'into' it as the first 1/4 dragged. Once it got going it was hard to put down. I often felt like I was lost & missing something; wishing for 'Coles Notes' to reference. Now I can't wait to 'just finish it' so that I can say it is completed. The gossamer thread holding this story together has me feeling indifferent about the revelations that are finally unfolding.
