I'm not sure how to rate this book. It coincides with "beautiful boy", this being what the son, the drug addict, went through. SERIOUS LANGUAGE. It is hugely dark, which I'm sure that world is for most who struggle through it. While I absolutely am not blaming the father, it is interesting to learn of some of the choices he made in his parenting that were just way too grown up for such a young boy...like he took the son to the movie "the crying game" (the movie about transexuals) when he was 9 years old! What! I have a 9 year old! Anyway, a liberal bringing up. Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking, and unimaginable that such a world exists, which I know it does. There is truly more language (f bombs primarily) than I have ever read in a book, but if you can stomach it (I surprisingly can), then it is written very well. For whatever reason, this book took me 2 months to read, and it should have taken 2 days. One of the most frightening books I have ever read. One parents living horror of dealing with a bright, intelligent son's addiction to meth. Aside from some colorful language, it is educational, heartbraking, and unbelievable. It was engaging to see all the different aspects of this father's life, the mistakes he believed contributed to the son's demise, and at times the need he, the father, had to desire to believe in a higher being. He was not a religious man, yet towards the end of the book he would find himself uttering prayers to God.
