I'm so glad you posted this. The Sound of Music is my FAVORITE movie and as a child I searched for the story on which it was based. Now I know!

I agree that at their CORE the books are different. The similarities I see between Rowling and Myers have to do with how people RESPOND to their books.
Think about all the people who created online communities and dressed up for premieres of HP movies - you're seeing something similar with Twilight. LOTS of online fan sites, fans dressing up and holding Twilight proms - it's a similar response even though the books are so different.

So I finally finished it last night. WOW! I had had one of the main "secrets" revealed to me because I read a Goodreads post on the book (my OWN fault :-), but the ending was unexpected. The plot was well conceived and well developed. The language was just as I like it.
What surprised me was the depth of character development. I couldn't help compare it to my first-read and favorite classic Wuthering Heights. Whereas there it's so NOT about character development, this one is ALL about character development. And I loved it. It'll now be listed as a favorite novel! And one I must re-read at a future date.

I have thoughts but you probably won't like them! :-) Keeping in mind I haven't re-read Caspian for about 4 years, I actually prefered the movie to the book. Caspian was never a favorite of mine - just one to get through to get to Dawn Treader - and I really loved the movie. It brought things out in a way that the book didn't for me. Although I should probably do another re-read to see if I see it differently now!

One of 2 books I didn't finish in high school English, but reading it again (or should I say COMPLETELY) during British Lit in college was rewarding. It definitely helps to have a background in English history to really get the satire. (Although my FAVORITE satire is Swift's Modest Proposal - of course the solution is to eat the babies!)

I think, at least for most of Twilight, the vampire stuff is handled well. New Moon and Eclipse were a little more graphic with the violence. (I'm interested to see how the movies - if sequels to Twilight are done - handle that and maintain a PG-13 rating)
The biggest concern I have, as far as age appropriateness goes, is the sensuality in the books. She writes that so well that I can feel what Bella is feeling as Edward smells her wrist, etc. and I think that with the passion in the relationship I'd want my daughter to be older before reading it.
Tate, not sure exactly what you're getting at but....I do think that TV and other visual media can be more problematic than books. There are A LOT of books that I've read that I've not seen the movies because I don't need to SEE that (violence, sexuality, whatever) brought to the screen and have those images stuck in my brain. With books, I think it's easier to gloss over that which is offensive/inappropriate because your brain is so much more active in the reading process.

I didn't get past the first couple chapters. However, I REALLY enjoy his Isabel Dalhousie series, The Sunday Philosophy Club - I've listened to them on CD and it's a great Scottish narrator!
I also have enjoyed his 44 Scotland Street books. They're published in the Scotsman weekly a chapter at a time and then collected for publication as a book (Isn't this how Dickens did his?)

Laugh out loud funny. I actually had to go into my room to read during SSR (silent sustained reading) time with my girls because my laughter was disturbing their attempts at reading. Not to mention my bursting into song regularly - a bit much for them. :-)
