Ann Patchett once again explores themes of race and family, this time with a Boston setting. There is the Irish Catholic politician, a widower who has raised his own son, the black sheep of the family, and two adopted Black boys on his own after his wife died. As the boys make their way into adulthood, a car accident on a wintry night brings some unexpected family connections and changes. This is the first book I've read on my Kindle, which I bought for long stretches away from home when it's inconvenient to tote am ample supply of reading material. It was very easy to adjust to reading in this format, but there were so many editorial lapses -- verb/noun agreement, "effect" for "affect" -- that I wondered if the electronic version might not be the final clean copy. That said, this Anna Pigeon mystery takes place in the (literally) chilling environment of an island on Lake Superior in the middle of winter where a study of wolves has been taking place.
