Not a novel, but a bunch of stories related to a torturer in Haiti, a Tonton Macoute (literally means Boogeyman) during Papa Doc Duvalier's tyranny from the 60s to the 80s. Several fantastic stories, with some filler.

On the level of prose, it's just really, really good. But ultimately I just wasn't taken by the book, beyond its (to me, brilliant) premise, to limn the darkness that ultimately bloomed from the late 60's eruption of light. He attempts this by following the coalescence of three harbingers of that darkness: the Manson Family, The Rolling Stones (and the fateful free concert at Altamont), and Kenneth Anger as the sort of torchbearer/documentarian of the the whole fall into chaos of that time.

Ultimately I think the book fails for me on a narrative level, as nothing comes together in a satisfying way. In many ways this is probably more "truthful" a take than a strictly narrative approach, but it all left me feeling distant and distracted. The book is so relentlessly internal that it never opens itself up enough to the time that it promises to illuminate, and I guess it just left me a little cold in the end....less

I agree with the question, "why do these women keep jumping Quirke?" He shows no wit, little charm, and is mainly a drunk and bitter guy. Not believable enough.

Its unbelievable that this book has been nominated for an Edgar award!
Christine Falls, written by John Banville using the name Benjamin Black, is a mystery set in Ireland and also in eastern U.S.
Pathologist Quirke stumbles upon his brother-in-law falsifying the file of one Christine Falls. This sets in motion Quirke’s investigation of who Christine was, how she ended up in the morgue, and what happened to the child she was carrying at the time of her death.
Sure Black uses lots of fancy metaphors in an attempt to create an atmospheric story, but they become redundant and downright irritating. Both Quirke and one of the nuns have problems walking, but couldn’t Black have thought of more than one way to describe their plights? Examples:
Pg. 96: “…dragging her hip after her like a mother dragging a stubborn child.”
Pg. 213: “He shifted uneasily, his huge leg tugging at him like a surly, intractable child."
Pg. 275: “...swinging himself forward on his stick he yanked himself from the room, like an angry parent dragging away a stubbornly recalcitrant child.”
Enough!!
The men can’t keep their penises in their pants. Women throw themselves at Quirke (Why?? He isn’t portrayed as all that attractive.), the most laughable being a nurse who comes out of nowhere in the hospital after Quirke is beaten up, and jumps him. The women characters are for the most part portrayed as “damaged”, fragile, and weak.
NOT RECOMMENDED!...less

Well-written but pretty boring because Banville doesn't concentrate on a few key characters. Also, the "evil" being perpetrated is evil but not so evil that you can balance a who-dunnit plot on it. And I would have gotten rid of the Staffords altogether; Chloe especially disappears in a way that says, "My Editor wanted it shorter." And Andy goes from sulky-sexy man-child to psycho-rapist with little transition.

I was expecting more here. Lush Life is fun to read, the story is engaging despite being pretty stock, yet the characters could all be fleshed out more, with some eliminated to make room for said fleshing out. Too many of them -- Yolanda being the best example -- exist almost entirely in dialogue. And it could be shorter; Eric's interrogation just goes on and on.
