I know! The chaste-ness is really only interesting outside the realm of the novel in the sphere of its popularity with young girls and their mothers. I think to myself, would I like my (eventual) daughter to be obsessed with vampire boys? Maybe not. Would I like her to have a sexually responsible role model who's not a total prude or an airhead? Hmmm.

I am reading the Buffy comics, and liking them a lot. What do you think?

oh gosh, I know, but I read this whole series this spring,and I probably should rate them more highly, because I honestly couldn't put them down. Why, is the question? They aren't particularly well written, in fact, some part of really badly written, but they were just compelling in that I-miss-Buffy/Harry Potter-so-bad-and-this-is-a-sort-of-compromise kind of way. All the hype in the media about Stephenie Meyer as the next J.K. is, of course, just overrated blather. I'd love to have a conversation with someone sometime about why I think it's okay that the main characters are so chaste in these books.
