My older boy is way cool. Last week a crew from the History Channel was here (don't ask). They interviewed him-- "do you have a normal family?"

He laughed and he said, yes, mostly-- "except that unlike in a 'normal' family, we don't hate our parents. We love them."

Stupid kid.

That is funny. I think I do have a kind of a comic schtick I do now and again. But it's also true that when I do those imitations-- that's what they sounded like. My kids used to play "Gammie and Hilda" (my grandmother and her deaf friend) when they were little-- interesting, "Hilda" (who only said "whoop whoop whoop") was the one they wanted to be.

Yeah, I'm a performer, I guess. Mostly this is a good thing-- although occasionally it takes some effort for me to calm down and listen to people; so many folks come to me not only to listen, but to talk so that someone else--mainly, me-- will listen, for a change, to THEM.
I've thought about writing a kids book, or a kids' point of view on the subject. It's not at the top of my very full to-do list right now, but sure: it'd be a very good thing.

There is a book out called LUNA, which tells the tale of a young trans person (in high school). I was thrilled that this book came out. And yet, the peace the main character finds is of a qualified kind, and the ending made me sad (won't give it away here, but it's not "and they lived happily ever after."

I know that for many trans people such happy endings are elusive. But I also sometimes want to scream because geez, it's not all suicide and misery. There are stories of joy and love and solace as well, and those are the stories I'm drawn to telling, not only because of my own generally positive experience, but also because of my annoying optimistic and upbeat nature.

I wish I were one of those authors who doesn't care what readers think; surely my training, under metafictionist deluxe John Barth gives me occasion to prize, above all, the work itself. And yet-- I do care, darn it all. Still, I think people who liked She's Not There will be all over I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU, since it's a similar voice, and a chance to think about some of these issues in a new way.

So many trans tales are tales about "the transition." IN ILTY I'm trying something very crafty, actually, which is to place a trans character into a story without the story being "about" those issues-- the fact of my being trans is a fact like, say, some other character being gay, or lesbian, or, say, Amish.
