I was disappointed by Ines of my Soul. Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors and I've loved all of her other books... but I just could not get into this one. I finished it through to the bitter end, but I never got to caring about the characters or the story. I "read" this (book on CD) a few years ago, and I was laughing out loud in the car the whole time. It was possibly the most ridiculous book I've ever encountered. I actually groaned at the end, at the line about "well, I guess you've never gone to bed with a yoga master". Ugh. In my defense, I got this book for free. I was marginally interested because I'd read about the author's story in the news, and since it had such a pretty cover, I picked it up at a book swap place.

The book itself was pretty awful. It's chapter after chapter of this girl's trainwreck lifestyle... sex with random strangers, getting evicted from apartments, sleeping with old men for money, getting fired from her job. I would recommend it if you want to feel better about yourself, or if you're looking for some softcore porn. I hated all the books we read in high school, too. Did you re-read this recently? I just read Cold Sassy a few months ago and I loved it... but I think there's something about being forced to read something that turns me off.
