I like to recommend this one to newcomers to town -- provided they're able to see through its biases. I thought Marshall's argument to be, well, obvious. I suppose it might work as a quick-read introductory text, and I appreciated that he's come around to understand the New Urbanist critique of the way America builds cities -- a decade after reflexively rejecting it (and, in a roundabout way, introducing him to the subject).

a quick, data-driven but still accessible, overview of what really matters and what doesn't about consumer choices and the environment. we're always bombarded with "do this, do that" messages (often conflicting) regarding our ecological footprints, and here's a no-nonsense guide to evaluating those claims.
