That's all I could think about the whole time I was reading this and that somewhat jaded my opinon of the book. The main character -Ms. Dodd seemed very progressive for 1854 and I questioned the "language" used by several of the female characters. It seemed to be of character/place for 1854. The fictional account of the actual "Brides for Indians" program was an interesting topic and the whole theme of the "white man" trying to civilize the Indians who had been living off the land and in harmony with Mother Nature was disconcerting. ...less

Beverly, thank you for the request. I usually limit my friends to people I actually know, but after reading your blog, I feel like I do. You are hilarious!

Thanks for the add! I seldom get requests from readers in Dublin! I hope I am able to get out to Easton for your book signing and meet you personally. Good luck with it and I know it will go well for you.

Alison, I would guess that reading any book in a foreign language is difficult. And I know for a fact that you are an extremely gifted writer in your own right, making me believe that it might have posed a formidable task to stay true to the author's words, sentiment, and ambience to make this the book you originally fell in love with. Besides that, although you understand Japanese, the book was set entirely in China/Tibet and peppered with Chinese names and phrases throughout. You did an amazing job. The translation was so fluid that I never got a sense of it ever having been written in any language but English. You should be very proud of yourself for a job well done. I certainly am proud of you, my Aussie mate!
