There's a Help link at the bottom of the page. I haven't done anything fancy, like adding covers, but I know it can be done.

I started out by adding books that I'd already read. Then I started some new shelves for To Be Read and Currently Reading, and I think I added one for Dumped. You might have to move them one by one.

Mostly what I've used Goodreads for is to look at reviews and discussions.

Two books -- The Passion and The Promise. A friend loaned them to me a few years ago. Amazon has used copies, cheap.

I see lots of people recommending Angela Carter. Have you read her stuff?

I love the movie -- watched the DVD three times so far. I read the book hoping for more background and I did get some, especially about Anton's motivations.

I have another question related to the book. Toward the end, there's some stuff with a Mexican in a Barracuda (cleaning blood off a window at a car wash)), and a dead state trooper. The Mexican is convicted of killing the trooper. We don't see the killing. Ed Tom thinks the Mexican is innocent of this killing but when he visits him in jail, the Mexican laughs at him and says yeah, he killed the trooper.

Was this in any way related to the rest of the story? Was this Mexican involved in the shootout at the motel and was the trooper chasing him? Or was this just another example of the sorry state of the world, and another reason for Ed Tom to give up and retire?

I can't do justice to the stories in this book. The characters and situations reminded me a bit of stories I've read by Larry Brown and William Gay. Except that Brown can get kinda snide and judgmental sometimes, and with Gay, I feel like I'm watching -- there's some distance between me and his characters.

But with Pollock, I was right inside these people's heads. I felt like I understood them, even when I didn't sympathize -- but mostly I did sympathize.

I need to read the book again. The first read was rushed because the stories were so compelling. I could stop and appreciate the writing (which is perfect -- not a false note anywhere, and some really funny stuff) but I didn't want to stop.

Seriously, this book will knock your socks off.

I thought the first half of the book was a bit slow -- maybe because every time we met a character from the first book, Airth had to remind us who they were and what their roles were in the earlier case. Did anyone else get tired of people worrying about Helen and how she'd react to John's involvement in another case? I did. It relegated Helen to the role of fearful wife and she's a better character than that.

It looks like Airth will revisit these people. I hope the next book features Probst, the German detective. He was interesting.
