I have realized that while I love Michael Chabon's writing, I no longer love his stories. There were sentences in The Yiddish Policemen's Union that were so incredibly well-written that I re-read them a few times just to savor how right they were. But the plot just did not do it for me. I need more feel. I need to care. And it just was not there. To be honest, I felt this way about The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, too. I miss his older books. His writing was not as well-developed, the plots were simpler, but I felt something as I read them. I read one story from this collection of fairy tales each night before bed. I keep waiting for them to infiltrate my dreams and maybe they do, but so far I have not remembered. I do think about them though. My favorite tale from the book is about wishes. A stranger offers the people of a village each one wish. How do you think that tale develops? You kind of know because it's a story that we've all heard, right? It has become part of our collective consciousness. I am very PRO PRIVACY so this book hit me where I'm interested. It's set in the near enough future that the technologies they are using are familiar, which makes it fun (or maybe it's even set in the now but I'm just a wee bit behind the times??). It's a story set in San Francisco. A terrorist attack has killed thousands of people. The Department of Homeland Security is outta control delving into everyone's personal information and activities. It's scary.
