Don't get me wrong, even with the three stars I still enjoyed this book. The three stars is varied on the mood at which I look at this book. The book is funny, but it's not overtly funny like a perfect timed stand-up routine. This book is Lewis Black as a person, not the character. In the short essays you find out about how he wrestles with god, his jewish upbringing, and dealing with the, as he puts it, "the christian smile." A good read, espically if you have a religious background, but don't expect a lot of jokes you can tell others when you read it.

I say this book is fiction and non-fiction for a reason. Treatise is fiction because the characters are not real people, but in the same sense of reality they are real people. I worked the warehouses in Youngstown and made some jokes about the Canfield richies while I dropped my sweat on boxes to be sent out to people who could buy and sell me without and batting their eyes in a wonder of who they are in life. Despite all the darkness this book does have hope, a hope that really doesn't prevail, but a hope of just being happy with not being a shithead that will make money off an Apocalypse. Heroin, drugs, kicking it, and all the shit in between. It's been told a million times and bastardized in films with overused camera angels to show the eyes of dispare. Tony O' Neill has something different; something that makes his book stand on its own rather than just being a drug book. RHYTHM.
