I'd forgotten how good Bester is. This clever tale is of a man who commits murder in a society sprinkled with telepaths, a science fiction murder mystery written by a man with a strong command of the English language.

Still a favorite. I love the sadness-tinged heroism of the poem, as the poet straddles a line between the ages.

A good read filled with interesting characters and technology and a healthy dose of politics. It's not quite anarchist but definitely not fond of the strong state. God save us from good intentions and new world orders!

My first re-read of this book in probably more than a decade. This was one of the books (if not THE book) to launch the cyberpunk genre: one part dystopia plus one part sci-fi, shaken, not stirred.

William Gibson's vision of computing was pretty amazing given that the book is almost twenty-five years old. I haven't been able to get into much of Gibson's later works, but this one was still an entertaining and engaging read.

More from the "new" Anne Rice on the life of Jesus. This one explores the events leading up to the wedding in Cana (John 2), including the baptism in the river Jordan, the temptation in the wilderness, and the calling of the disciples. I've found the two book in the series to be surprisingly humble and reverent.

Not nearly as good as the Alatriste series. The rambling philosophical dialogues (the most annoying of which didn't even bother with quotation marks) detracted from the well-described settings and plot elements. One of the questions raised by the book: are the silent witnesses to evil deeds complicit in those deeds?

An excellent short work on how and why readers read books. It gives me a fresh perspective not only on the types of books I read, but the kind of reading these books invite (or prevent, as the case may be).
