I'm not a huge fan of graphic novels and I completely overlooked this one when it was first published. But I picked it up to decide whether or not to move it to the Graphic Novel section of the library and whether or not it should be in J or YA. And I have to say that I was impressed. It had a great plot, was well-written and the artwork was great. I could even tell the characters apart and read all of the words which doesn't always happen with some of the graphic novels I read. I liked the way it started with the text to begin the story, sort of like the prologue in a movie. And then we get into the action of the story which entails the search for a token, divided loyalties and courage. McCaughren is an amazing writer. She sets up the characters, the scenes, the plot, everything, so that the reader buys into the improbable and believes the impossible. I found myself becoming more and more uneasy about Victor and other characters without any real basis other than the atmosphere that the author created. I could see Sym, with all of her insecurities and longings. She became very real to me and as she became stronger and more sure of herself, readers begin rooting for her. A great piece of YA fiction. ]]>
