Funny, I just came across this book the other day and it sounded quite smutty. Which means I wanted to read it :-)

Isn't this the guy you were telling me about? I definitely need to check this out. Mapplethorpe is fascinating as well -- not just for the sensuality but the messages about class, race, viewership, relatability, and taboo.

And p.s. I'm not a gay man, but I want to know about this anyway :-)

Sounds interesting. Will add to my to-read list, which is already miles-long, no thanks to you. Anyway... scary how much one waits for validation, and when it comes, it comes in terms of mere words and recognition from others. No (hu)man is an island.

I predict I will hate the movie. It's nice to read a fairy tale written for adults, but this one, like an archetypical fantasy hung by the fingernails of its premise -- characters were all flat, plot was predictable, and as soon as I turned the last page I forgot why I enjoyed reading it so much.

Total brain candy -- thus the three stars. A spoiled daughter of divorced parents (think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless) gets sent off to a school for delinquents where all the teachers are actually ghosts of classic authors who committed suicide. One renegade ghost tries to mix fiction with real life at the risk of causing apocalypse, and the protagonist finds she's the only one who can stop it. Totally goofy, but also totally fun and not to be taken seriously at all.

While not the best Koontz ever, this is also not his worst. Fun, enjoyable, suspense-filled. Golden retrievers take center stage after appearing as secondary characters in many of Koontz's other books. Koontz does what he does best -- mixes mystery of the supernatural kind with human psychology.
