This is my first experience with John Crowley, and I'm really enjoying myself. Really imaginative fantasy that goes far beyond what one thinks when one hears the word. Extraordinarily literary and intellectually challenging.

August 3: Finished this last night. The ending is a bit more bizarre than the rest of the novel, but I can understand why this is so. As things get more bizarre for the characters, they also get more bizarre for the reader. This book is intellectually huge. It took me a long time because it certainly can't be classified as "light" reading. Overall a fulfilling and necessary read.

There are some authors whose books I purchase in hardcover because I simply can't wait for the paperback to come out. Nevada Barr is one of those authors. I was greatly anticipating this book and I was not disappointed. Nevada Barr is hands down my top-five list of authors of fiction.

A fantastic gallop through history. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, particularly because the New England setting was beautifully described and because history is so gracefully integrated into the plot. The characters are well developed and the story kept me turning pages as often as possible. The only weakness, in my opinion, is that the political speak is a bit trite. However, can't wait to read more William Martin.

Just another ho-hum ramble through a story from the imagination of Terry Brooks. While the characters in this book are more clearly defined than those in its predecessor, I found that it still took me a very long time to read because it wasn't one of those books that I just can't wait to pick up. Not bad, just not fantastic. I am interested in where Brooks goes next with this story, however, so I suppose at some point I'll read the next one.

It was fun to read this, the second Adam Dalgliesh novel, immediately on the heels of the first one. Here we're finally getting into the character of Adam Dalgliesh and his personal thoughts and actions. The ending was tricky...just what I like. Here P.D. James also begins to show her talent for beautiful prose. There's not as much here as in her later novels, but there are certainly a few moments where the reader can glimpse what P.D. James is to become in later years. And while this is not the deep read that is characteristic the later James novels, it is a good one nonetheless.
