This reigns as my favorite book of all time, and I'll try to summarize why briefly. I'm an atheist, but I believe in science. And that's exactly what Sagan is explaining science is... the search for intelligent life is a religion to Ellie Arroway, much like Christianity is to Joss Palmer. And isn't it possible to believe in the higher power of intelligent life elsewhere, so long as we believe in something?

I really liked the narrative throughout, but I could've done without the last section of the book. I don't want to spoil what's in that section, but it raised issues that I would have preferred to have left out of my idyllic interpretation.

I didn't find the book preachy or overtly religious at all; it was solid, well-written fiction that kept up at a good clip throughout. Sure, there were some surreal elements, but they worked. I'd recommend this.

Very cute, and a nice addendum to the Harry Potter series. Now I have to go and reread Book 7, in which Rowling mentions "Babbitty Rabbitty" and "The Three Brothers."

Sometimes I found my mind wandering while reading this (never a good sign), but other times I was completely captivated. While I can't wholly say this book has a cohesive narrative thread running through it, the author more than makes up for that with his witty writing style and humorous footnotes.

If you're the least bit interested in science or microbes, I'd say give it a shot, for sure.
