I've read this series for a long time and it's one of the few books I dog-ear and return to over and over. My copy of this book is gone, so I'll get another one and start again from scratch.

Most fiction, film, and performing arts I've encountered has a false step somewhere: A character saying something that doesn't ring true, an awkward scene that is forced and unnatural. A month before reading "Blindness" I saw Beckett's "Happy Days" at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and mention the play because it worked, in my mind, without a single misstep of any kind, the same as Blindness. Both pieces present and examine human interaction and behavior under inconceivable circumstances yet everything - the characters, dialogue, scenes, and behavior - is completely believable. (Seeing Happy Days made me want to revisit Un chien andalou but I haven't found a copy anywhere.)

I reread and think and reflect and try to draw lessons, but I cannot understand fiction like this by myself. I notice the salient elements and observe the ecologies created by each writer without really understanding them. Understanding requires human interaction: discussion, debate, sleep, and tension, and all I own is the latter.
