This book set out to explore children's deepest emotions and it definitely touched mine. From the anguish of being denied food to the fear of Max's room turning into a jungle and having to stand up to the Wild Things and then the regret mixed with relief when it ended...wow. Of course, I was hypersensitive, too. :P ]]>

Every time I go to my parents' house, I'm reminded that my mother *did* indoctrinate me a bit into Zionism...or at least the Jewish narrative. :P My shelves are filled with books on Jewish themes that she placed there.
When I was younger and less Jewishly invested, the thing that struck me the most about this story was still the relationship between mother and child...from the letdowns of being scolded (yeah, I was hypersensitive myself) to the real fears of boarding a train for Palestine during war time, never knowing if you'd see each other again. These images haunted me far after I put the book down. For awhile I hated it, now I'm grateful for my youthful, organic foray into my heritage. ]]>

I can hardly believe I found this book on here. I had a short story published inside, "The Locket," which was about a young girl who found a magical locket on the beach. Probably not the best of stories, but perhaps I can forgive myself, given I was about 11 or 12. :P I still remember how excited I was to see it bound up- more than that, someone had drawn an illustration of my protagonist, her mother and sister on the boardwalk. Talk about fiction coming alive!
I'm adding this here as a message to all aspiring authors- it *is* possible. And for me, personally- remember, you're already an author. :) (Mayhaps I can find the college book of poetry, which accepted by submission freshman year... :P) ]]>
