Very graphic and interesting thriller set in Amish country Ohio. The unique main character, Kate Burkholder left her Amish background to become a cop. She's a conflicted, well-rounded protaganist demonstrating the occasional clash of cultures in the area. Strout's luscious prose and attention to the normally mundane make this book a pleasure to read. It's sometimes difficult to absorb the heartache, everyday distress, and disappointments, but the rare moments of true human connection and joy are worth finishing the book. It's not so much a cohesive novel as it is a collection of vignettes about a little town in Maine, all involving Olive in some way or another, though she's rarely the center star. Brown's teen novel about the aftermath of a brutal school shooting takes an intimate look at the survivors, including the shooter's girlfriend. What could devolve into stereotype and charicature actually turns out to be a resonant and thought-provoking story.

Brown's narrative and characters lead the reader to question the concept of guilt. Can you still love someone who acted violently? If you participated in creating a list that targeted certain people, but didn't act on it, are you still responsible? If you bullied, did you really get the whole ball rolling?

The ending could have become pat and tidy, but Brown never lets her characters do so. They even address the issue of how their glowing portrayal in the media, telling the audience that they are not fine and not completely healed despite what some people want to think.
