This story - about a girl struggling with the aftermath of a high school shooting - immediately reminded me of Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes. However, this book focused only on the thoughts of Valerie.

Even though the title use the Alex Cross character name, this story has absolutely nothing to do with the Alex Cross book series. The only "link" to Alex Cross is the first 2 or 3 pages of the book when Alex is 'talking' and explaining that his great grandfather is a character in this story of racial unrest in the South.

The main character is a lawyer from Washington DC who is asked personally by President Teddy Roosevelt to investigate stories of lynching in his southern home town. Then the President completely ignores all reports, does not respond at all. It is just one of the strange parts of the story.

Just another of the recent books that Patterson has "co authored," but my feeling is that Patterson is really just selling his characters' names so that the publisher can capitalize on the Patterson name in order to sell books. Since we are planning a trip to Disney World later this year, the setting of this book in the Magic Kingdom sounded interesting and entertaining. Unfortunately, the writing is very unimpressive. The author has several imaginative ideas, but just doesn't seem to develop any of them enough. This was a book that I 'forced' myself to finish in the hopes that it would become more enjoyable.
