I've always wondered about Leah and how she must have felt, so I really enjoyed getting in her head. I keep looking for the book Card says will follow this up, only to be disappointed. It sure would be interesting to get a good look into the complex family dynamics after Jacob ends up with all those wives....less

Ugh. I really was enthralled with the idea of this novel, but obviously I'm not post-modern enough to enjoy this sort of book. Coetzee's narrator really irritated me and I absolutely did not buy her POV as being a woman's. Some male authors can do a credible female narrator, but I think this Nobel laureate should stay inside his own gender!...less

2-1/2 stars. I like that much of the book seems to be mocking academia and the dominant premise that happiness is uninteresting. While I found it thoroughly entertaining, I think a middle reader would get lost or lose interest. It's a fascinating and adventurous story, but has so many tangents that it gets confusing. Much of my enjoyment came from Gopnik's references to Racine and Moliere and from already having a soft spot for Gopnik's prose. His target audience might not enjoy the allusions as much....less

Rachel's parents underestimate both her and Nana Sashie when they try to keep her from stirring up the old woman's memories. The bond they forge strenghtens them both and mystifies the generations in between. Fortunately, the two are stubborn enough to continue despite the opposition and succeed in preserving a fascinating and important piece of the family's history.
"Nana Sashie dared to take me on a detour, and in doing so she circled back, and I too.... It was time out of line, but time laced with the bright filaments of memory that in turn linked two people at the opposite ends of life for a vital moment in each other's existence." (page 150)...less
